Bernie Sanders returns to Kingdom roots

STANNARD — U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders paid a visit to one of the haunts of his youth Saturday with a visit to Stannard, one of the Northeast Kingdom’s smallest and least known towns.  Senator Sanders, who is running for re-election this fall, made a campaign stop shortly after marching in Greensboro’s “Funky Fourth” parade.

His Stannard visit was billed as a picnic, and there was plenty of food on hand, but a band of showers that traveled over the town, pushed the more than 100 people who came to hear from Mr. Sanders, into the Stannard Town Hall’s meeting room, a tight fit.

Mr. Sanders arrived, accompanied by his son Levi who spent his infancy and toddler years in the town.  According to his father’s account, Levi’s parents bought their house on Lazy Mill Road here, the day before he was born.
