North Country Principal resigns

• Bookmarks: 27

NEWPORT — Parents of students at North Country Union High School were startled Friday to receive a message through the Parent Square system informing them that Principal Chris Young had tendered his resignation, effective immediately.  The announcement, which did not include any explanation of his decision, came only a little over a week after the school year began.

Mr. Young, who took the helm at North Country in 2019, saw the school through difficult times, including the COVID pandemic, and the school’s time holding classes in tents while efforts to remove PCBs from school buildings were underway.

Before starting at North Country, Mr. Young was principal of Troy Elementary School in North Troy.

According to the message sent to parents, Sarah Pickering, Anita Mayhew, and Ian Dinzeo will work together to carry out the principal’s responsibilities while a search for a new principal is underway.

The North Country school board scheduled a special meeting for Tuesday, September 8, to discuss and accept Mr. Young’s resignation.

Mr. Young’s resignation is not the only change in local school leadership.  North Country Supervisory Union Superintendent Elaine Brewster (formerly Collins) has already told her board to look for her letter of resignation, although she is expected to fill out the school year.
