Generosity reigns

by Pat Sanders

JAY — Approximately 46 Jay residents came together at the Jay-Westfield Elementary School on March 4 for the annual Town Meeting and potluck luncheon.  After a brief social time over doughnuts and coffee, the meeting was called to order at 10 a.m.

Janet Butler was elected moderator, Dave Sanders was once again elected to serve a three year term on the select board and Dorran Dougherty was elected for a one year term as constable.

Taking a brief respite from town business, Ms. Butler introduced Representative Mark Higley who gave the attendees an update of what has been happening in Montpelier. Representative Higley now serves with Representative Mike Marcotte to represent the expanded district.  He is a member of the Ways and Means Committee.

Continuing with the business portion of the meeting, the select board budget of $431,721, the highway budget of $525,804 and the town garage and equipment budget of $225,627 all received unanimous approval with very little discussion.

Continuing their generosity, the townspeople unanimously approved $99,434 for the Jay Volunteer Fire Department which is 3.25 percent of the Grand List, $149,219 for the Newport Ambulance Service and $60,620 for the maintenance and operation of the Jay Land Trust/Jay Community Recreation Center.

Still feeling in a generous mood, Jay residents unanimously voted for all of the appropriations submitted by social service agencies totaling $11,557.

The meeting adjourned at 11:15 a.m. and was followed by the Jay Westfield School District meeting, which was attended by about 35 residents. The Jay Westfield Elementary School budget of $2,228,334 was passed by a ballot vote of 30 yes and 2 no.  This vote will be comingled with the Westfield results.  Still not lacking in generosity, the school board expenditure of $1,251,801 passed unanimously.  The meeting adjourned at 11:40 a.m. and townspeople once again enjoyed spending time with their friends and neighbors over a delicious potluck lunch.
