NEWPORT — Police say a robbery attempt in Barton was foiled when the intended victim failed to hand over cash although he was confronted with a handgun. Instead, they say, he grabbed a pair of scissors and chased the would-be bandit.

Zachariah D. Rathburn, 21, of Derby was brought to the Criminal Division of Orleans County Superior Court on February 7 and charged with attempted assault and robbery with a weapon. He pled innocent and was sent to Northern State Correctional Facility by Judge Robert Bent when he couldn’t come up with $10,000 bail.

Hezekiah D. McCullough, 22, of St. Johnsbury, who is also known as Hezekiah Morrison, had bail set at $75,000 after he pled innocent to aiding in the commission of a felony. He was also sent to Northern State.
