School bus drivers on a long hard road

A long and clunky process to get licensed, coupled with worsening student behavior, is putting the future of bus transportation for rural communities in jeopardy.

The Chronicle spoke with Butler’s Bus Service about Orleans Central Supervisory Union (OCSU) as well as with Elaine Collins, superintendent of North Country Supervisory Union (NCSU).

Butler’s Bus Service has been around since 1949, and the company has changed hands several times.  It operates six locations in Vermont and New Hampshire.  Julie Sicard has been the manager of the Barton location for the past four years.  Every four years the supervisory union goes out to bid for bus service; Butler’s current contract runs through 2024.
