Judge reverses assault conviction

NEWPORT — On June 24, 2022, a jury convicted David Vaz, 33, of Springfield, Massachusetts, of charges related to the beating of a man suspected of being a police informant.  On March 14 Judge Lisa Warren dismissed the charges in the case — aggravated assault, kidnapping, and first-degree unlawful restraint — after finding that the state had failed to provide information that could have helped Mr. Vaz in court.

The decision, if upheld, would mean prosecutors would not be able to refile the charges.

The charges Mr. Vaz was convicted of are connected to events of November 12, 2017, which first came to the attention of law enforcement when a Lowell man called State Police to say  someone banged on his front door asking to be let in around 10:45 p.m….
