In Lowell, town trucks burned in garage fire

LOWELL — A fire that destroyed the town garage here created unexpected challenges for the Lowell community.  The blaze took more than an important town building, it also incinerated town vehicles and other equipment.  The loss of the trucks couldn’t come at a more unfortunate hour.  Winter is still months from ending and buying new rigs these days is an extended process.

The first calls alerting firefighters to the fire came around 2:35 p.m. on January 15.  Drivers on Route 100 called 911 to report that the town garage was actively on fire.  The Lowell Fire Department was toned out at 2:51 to respond to the calls and found, when they arrived, what was classified as a fully involved structure fire.

The local firefighters received help from members of the North Troy Fire Department, Troy Fire Department, and Newport Center Fire Department through Mutual Aid.  Route 100 was shut down while firefighters carried out their work. By 7 p.m. the fire was extinguished, and firefighters were able to leave the scene.
