Hilmer’s offers help with cooking through COVID

NEWPORT — A small group of socially distanced students were gathered at Hillmer’s on Main on a Wednesday afternoon awaiting the start of a Chinese cooking class offered by chef and restaurant co-owner Travis Elmer.

With a cling-clang of Mr. Elmer’s sharpened knife, the class was called to attention.  “Everyone ready?” he asked in a quiet, yet commanding tone.

The students attentively listened to instructions for various Chinese favorites, like lo mein and pork fried rice, all the while jotting notes.
