Helena (Freehart) Dudley

obit_h_f_dudley

Helena Freehart Dudley, 93, of Orleans, died peacefully on Sunday, February 20, 2011, at Newport Health Care Center in Newport.
She was born on August 18, 1918, in Irasburg, one of six children born to Enos J. and Betsy (Whipple) Freehart.
She grew up on the family farm, in the shadow of beautiful Butternut Hill in Irasburg, and attended graded school at the one-room schoolhouse located at the intersection of Route 58 and Guyette Road in Irasburg.  She graduated from Orleans High School in 1936, where she was an all-star basketball player and member of the school’s championship team.  She graduated from Burlington College in 1938 and worked as a legal secretary for the law office of Paul Rexford in Newport during the 1940s.
She met and married her first husband, Donald Blodah, in Newport, who was later killed in action in Europe during World War II.  She met and married her second husband, Rawlston E. Dudley, in Orleans in 1946, where they made their home and raised their family.  Mr. Dudley predeceased her in 1975.  She later met her friend and companion, Stanley Kipp, in Orleans.  Together, they enjoyed traveling, dancing, golfing, and spending their winters in Haines City, Florida.  He predeceased her in 2009.
She was a devoted, lifelong member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Orleans.  She assisted her father in laying the foundation for the church at its present location.  She served on the Parish Council for many years and was also a dedicated CCD teacher.  She was a member and former chairman of the Ladies Guild for several years and helped to organize numerous events and functions for the benefit of the church.
Mrs. Dudley pursued many interests during her life.  In July 1945, she received her pilot’s license after completing her first solo flight out of Newport State Airport.  Her longest flight was to Burlington International Airport.  On occasion, for fun, she would “buzz” the family farm in her Piper Cub much to the consternation of her father (and the livestock).  She later gave up flying to raise her family.
She was also a longtime member of the Orleans Country Club and enjoyed golfing and socializing there.
Mrs. Dudley devoted much of her later life to preserving the family farm in Irasburg by maintaining the land and keeping it open for sportsmen and other outdoor activities.
Upon being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and experiencing failing health, she resided for the last five years at the Newport Health Care Center in Newport.  She was greatly loved and enjoyed by the staff at the health care center.
Mrs. Dudley leaves two sons:  Jack Dudley and his wife, Dani, of Saco, Maine, and Jay Dudley and his wife, Nancy, of Orleans; a daughter, Jill Dudley, of Richmond; grandchildren:  Jody McFarland and her husband, Jessi, Laurel Dudley, Kevin Dudley, and Nathan Dudley, Jayme Dudley, and Angela Mandalinci and her husband, Ali; three great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Miranda, and Anthony; and two great-great-grandchildren, Katona and Gabe; and a sister, Ernestine Ronan.  She was predeceased by her two bothers, Enos Freehart Jr. and Wayne Freehart; and by two sisters, Irvina Banks and Christina Freehart.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 24, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home at 4670  Darling Hill Road in Newport.  Internment will take place at a later date at the family cemetery in Irasburg.
