KEVIN SMITH HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION UPDATE; BROWNINGTON, VT

The Orleans County State’s Attorney Office and Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit announce the arrest and indictment of Jennifer Simard, 46, of Brownington for Murder, 2nd Degree, and Manslaughter.

On March 2, 2018, an Orleans County Grand Jury returned a true bill indictment charging Simard with Murder, 2nd Degree, and Manslaughter for the March, 28 2016 death of Kevin Smith in Brownington, Vermont.

This indictment is the result of the on-going investigation into the death of Kevin Smith by the Major Crime Unit.

Simard was processed at the Derby Barracks.  She was lodged at Northern State Correctional Facility for lack of $100,000 bail.  She is due to appear in Orleans Superior Court – Criminal Division on Monday, March 5.

BROWNINGTON DEATH INVESTIGATION

On 03/28/16, at approximately 2032 hours, Vermont State Police Troopers from Derby responded to a 911 report of an unresponsive male subject in a residence on Evansville road in the town of Brownington.  Troopers and Orleans Rescue arrived and found Kevin Smith, 38 of Brownington, deceased of unknown causes.

At this time, a death investigation is underway and the deceased will be brought to the Office of the Chief Medical examiner for an autopsy to determine cause and manner of death.

The investigation is continuing and further information will be released when available.

**UPDATED Information**

On 03/28/16 the Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) located in Burlington VT updated the findings in regard to Kevin Smith’s death.  The OCME has ruled the Manner of Smith’s death as, Homicide.  The Cause of Death being, Stab wound of chest.

The Vermont State Police continue to investigate Smith’s death and ask anyone with any information to contact the Vermont State Police.

No further information will be released at this time.
