Harry L. Burnham

Harry L. Burnham, 70, of Barton died on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at North Country Hospital in Newport following a brief illness.
He was born in Barton on January 19, 1941, the son of George Burnham and Annie Stone Burnham. He was raised by his mother, Annie, and her husband, Albert Mason. He attended school in Albany and served his country in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Burnham lived in Brookfield, Massachusetts, prior to returning to Albany in the late 1970s. He was employed at Barton Motors for many years as an auto mechanic. He then established his own business, Burnham Boat Slings, making and selling accessories for sculling boats, and later had a woodworking shop in Albany.
Mr. Burnham enjoyed the outdoors; if he saw a mountain he had to climb it. He loved tenting on the mountains with his sons, deer hunting, fishing, and in later years had worked for the state of Vermont as a guide for moose hunting and doing moose counts. He played men’s softball for several years, and in recent years enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports. For the past few years, he had made his home at the senior apartments in Barton where he was blessed with loving and caring friends.
He leaves two sons: Michael and his partner, Gina Miller, of Holland, and Douglas and his wife, Mary, of Irasburg; a daughter, Paula Cote of Newport; two sisters: Carol Carey and her husband, Louis, and Gail Paquette and her husband, Tom, both of Massachusetts; eight grandchildren: Morgan and Eythan Burnham, Eric and Sarah Burnham, Robert and Jonathan Cote, and Alex and Benjamin Duranleau. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, George; and his daughter, Mellissa Tinker, who died October 22, 2011.
A graveside service was held December 4, at the Albany Village Cemetery.

Dorothy Anna Doremus

Dorothy Anna Doremus, 85, of Barton died on November 27, 2011, in Newport.
She was born May 11, 1926, in New York City, a daughter of Charles and Helen Kruger. She graduated from Bound Brook High School in Bound Brook, New Jersey.
On December 3, 1966, she married Harry Doremus who survives her. Mrs. Doremus was a Classification Officer for the Corrections Department for the state of New Jersey. She was also a secretary for Walden Harding Company of Somerset, New Jersey.
Her hobbies included knitting, and crocheting, and she gave her items away to the Federated Church in Orleans and special friends. She was also a doll collector and a former member of the Orleans Federated Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Bound Brook.
She is survived by her husband Harry Doremus of Barton; her children: Charles Miller and his wife, Sue, of South Bound Brook, New Jersey, Jeff Doremus and his wife, Karen, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Lynne Russell and her husband, Scott of Tunbridge, and Christine Doremus of Tunbridge; her six grandchildren; her two great-grandsons; her one great-great-granddaughter; her sister Helen Michalowski and her husband, John, of St. Augustine, Florida; her sister-in-law MaryAnn Kruger of South Bound Brook; her five nieces; her two nephews; and by close family friends: Michele, Karen, Richie, and Karl. She was predeceased by a daughter, Jeanne Flax, and by two brothers: Eugene and Edward Kruger.

Eleanor M. Griggs

Eleanor M. Griggs, 77, of Craftsbury died on Thursday evening, December 1, 2011, at North Country Hospital, in Newport, following a long illness.
She was born in Eden on November 8, 1934, the daughter of Hughie and Beatrice (Ingalls) McLean.
She attended Eden Mountain, Paradise Valley and Eden Corners schools. She later attended Goddard College, just short of a bachelor’s degree in early education.
On November 30, 1952, Mrs. Griggs was married to Reginald L. Griggs at the parsonage in Craftsbury Common; 59 years were celebrated the day prior to her passing. They made their home on Collinsville Road in Craftsbury. Mrs. Griggs worked at the Ware Knitters in Hardwick, made Christmas wreaths and garlands, selling some across the nation as well as worldwide. Mrs. Griggs earned a Ford Foundation Grant in 1971 which was an honor bestowed to only seven at that time. She earned this grant to gather information from across the country to establish early education centers in Vermont. She sat on the National Board to establish educational television, including Sesame Street.
Mrs. Griggs enjoyed many years teaching vacation Bible school at the United Church in Craftsbury Common. She played the piano and guitar with the Eden Mountain Boys band for many years, playing and singing and calling square dances. She also was an artist, enjoying painting, drawing and crafts, including knitting, crocheting, sewing, quilting and needlepoint. She also loved the outdoors, working in her flower and vegetable gardens, and made cakes, many wedding cakes. She mostly enjoyed time with her family and extended family. After retirement, she and Mr. Griggs spent winters in Florida.
She leaves her husband, Reginald Griggs of Craftsbury; her daughter Debra Lamphere and her husband, Larry, of Lowell; her brother John McLean and his wife, Virginia, of Eden; her sister Shirley McLean of Arcadia, Florida; her grandchildren: Germain and Joni Houle, Nichole Houle and Randy, Deija Burbank, Jessica Griggs, Jolene Griggs and Lucas Griggs; her great-grandchildren: Gage, Gerry, Exavier, Chance, Nacara, Samantha, Benjamin, Isaiah and Abbigail; her step-grandchildren: Larry, Jeremiah, Roxanne, Kaylynn and Forrest Lamphere and Patricia Drew; her daughter-in-law, Deborah Miller; as well as many step-great-grandchildren, brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and many extended family members. Mrs. Griggs was also the mother of two bear cubs: Yogi and Smokey who were born in 1960 and placed back in the wild at around six months old. She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers: James and William; her sister Beverly Clark; and her beloved son, Gerald “GG” Griggs, who died in 2007.
A funeral service will be held Friday, December 9, at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Craftsbury with the Reverend Alan Parker officiating. Friends may call at the Davis Funeral Home in Craftsbury Common on Thursday, December 8, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Philippe William Guay

Philippe William Guay, 52, of Island Pond died on November 27, 2011, in Burlington.
He was born March 11, 1959, in Newport, a son of Pauline (Elliott) Guay and the late Gerard Guay. Mr. Guay graduated from North Country Union High School in the Class of 1977.
He was employed as a carpenter in Burlington, and he also at one time was employed by Lyndon Office Equipment. His hobby was photography.
He is survived by his children: Staff Sergeant William Monfette, United States Marine Corps Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Jessica Monfette of Orleans, Jeffrey Monfette and his wife, Marijah, of Morgan, and Eric Guay of Island Pond; his mother Pauline Guay of Island Pond; his grandchildren: Alyssa Monfette, Kaitlyn and Logan Verge, and Chase Monfette; his sisters: Leesa Guay Timpson and her husband, Cliff, of Milton, and Denise Clough of Burlington; a step-brother, Richard Perry, and his wife, Gayle, of Danville; his companion Susan McNulla of Island Pond; his nephew Ian Clough; his step-nephew and -niece Travis and Angela Perry; and by Deborah and Shayne Monfette of Irasburg, the mother and adoptive father of William, Jeffrey, and Jessica Monfette. He was predeceased by his father Gerard Guay in 1983.
Funeral services were held December 1, in Island Pond. Interment followed at the Lakeside Cemetery in Island Pond.

Earl E. Martin

Earl E. Martin Sr., 75, of Island Pond died on November 30, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born April 4, 1936, in Coteau-Station, Quebec, a son of Daniel and Myrtle (Aseltine) Martin. On December 31, 1955, he married Ruth Wood who survives him.
Mr. Martin was an equipment operator for Green Mountain Mulch in Derby. Among his hobbies he enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Ruth Martin of Island Pond; by his children: Earl Martin Jr. and his wife, Francine, of Island Pond, Robert Martin and his wife, Tia, of Niceville, Florida, Dale Martin of Nashua, New Hampshire, Denis Martin of Morgan, and Tammy Barrup of Derby; by ten grandchildren: Lance, Corey, Adam, Cody, Dawn, Andrew, Aimee, Eric, Jessica and Martin; and by his great-grandchildren: Chance, Sarah, Taylor, Connor, Austin, Leo, Lucas, Brooklynn, Gracie, Corey, James, Austin and Paul; by his sister Beatrice Gentley of Compton, New Hampshire; by his sister-in-law Eva Martin of Island Pond; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers: Floyd and Daniel Martin; and by three sisters: Myrtle Morrisette, Louella Covey, and Blanche Giroux.
A graveside service was held December 5 at the Lakeside Cemetery in Island Pond.

Beatrice A. Whittier
Beatrice Ann Whittier, 65, of Barton died on Thursday, December 1, 2011, at her residence.
She was born June 30, 1946, in Barton, the daughter of the late Edson and Ethel (Paul) Basford. She attended Barton Academy. Following her education, she moved to Massachusetts, where she was employed as a waitress at Dunkin’ Donuts. She later was a caregiver to the elderly. Ms. Whittier retired in 1983. She enjoyed playing bingo, knitting and basketball.
Survivors include a daughter, Glory Anne Daignault of Shaftsbury; four sisters: Beverly Messier of Florida, Phoebe Kimball of Coventry, Gloria White of Greensboro and Lorraine Gillfillian of Nashua, New Hampshire; two granddaughters: Hannah and Hillary, both of Shaftsbury; and by several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by five siblings: Myrna Brosseau, Barbara Isham, Charles Basford, Brian Basford and Bernard Basford.

Death Notice
Jean Poppy Day died on December 4, 2011, at her home in Craftsbury, surrounded by loved ones.
