Nash Basom

obit n basom

Nash Basom, 69, died at his home in Glover on August 3, surrounded by his family.
Born in 1942 in Alexandria, Virginia, Mr. Basom first fell in love with Vermont when he attended Farm and Wilderness Summer Camps as a youth in the 1950s. Later, he and his partner, Mariel Hess, moved to Vermont permanently, where they built a home in Glover and raised their daughters, Reeve and Kit.
Mr. Basom was passionate about racial equality, social justice, and education. In the 1960s, he was a civil rights worker in Mississippi. In the early 70s, he worked on relief efforts in Malawi and Tanzania and as a supporter of the Mozambique movement for independence. During his life in Vermont, Mr. Basom worked as the first director of Orleans County Court Diversion, as a member of the Newport Community Justice Center Steering Committee and Reparative Board, as a staff member at Farm and Wilderness and chair of the board of trustees, and as a selectman for the town of Glover. In his 25-year career as a guidance counselor at North Country Union High School in Newport, Mr. Basom was a valuable resource and mentor for thousands of young people and their families.
Mr. Basom found joy in hard work, rich conversation, and collaboration. He believed in the essential goodness of people and had a deep reverence for the natural world. One of Mr. Basom’s gifts was his ability to transform challenge into opportunity. He inspired and empowered us to build connections through the best in ourselves and each other.
Those wishing to celebrate Mr. Basom’s life are welcome to join the family at their home, 2980 Perron Hill in Glover, for a gathering at 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 20.
Contributions in Mr. Basom’s memory can be made to the Farm and Wilderness Foundation or to a cause of one’s choice.
