Gilbert C. Whipple

obit_g_c_whipple

Gilbert C. Whipple, 90, lifetime resident of Newport Center, died peacefully on Wednesday, September 29, 2010, surrounded by his family at the Union House Nursing Home in Glover.
He was born on August 21, 1920, in Newport Center, a son of Charles Whipple and Etta Sweet Whipple.
Mr. Whipple was a simple man, yet a giant among men.  He loved his God, and he loved his church.  He loved his family, and he loved his life as a farmer.  He was a fifth-generation farmer on the Whipple Farm on the Number 12 Road in Newport Center.  He was born a farmer in his heart, and he farmed from the time he was old enough to walk to the barn until 1980 when a fire destroyed the barn and an award-winning herd of 65 registered Holsteins.  When he was no longer able to farm for himself, Mr. Whipple found great enjoyment in helping his neighbors, planting flowers and mowing the lawn at his home, and spending time with his family.
Few people live to be 90 years old.  Even fewer are able to say their life was perfect, and they would not change a thing.  Gilbert Whipple was not a rich man in his wallet, but he was the wealthiest of men where it counted — in his heart. He is greatly loved, and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by the love of his life — his wife of 66 years, Vivian (Willis) Whipple.  He also leaves his six children:  Joyce Twing of Chelsea, Evelyn Kelley of Newport Center and her husband, Skip, of Derby, Beverly Schinck and her husband, Denis, of Mansonville, Quebec, Donna Whipple of Providence, Rhode Island, Wayne Whipple of Wells River and his longtime friend Arthur Hull of Boston, Massachusetts, and Ed Whipple and his wife, Kate, of Coventry; his eight grandchildren:  Shawn Twing and his wife, Collins, of Chelsea, Carmen McCammon of Newport, Carla Whipple and her fiancé, Robert Camara, of Providence, Rhode Island, Jeremy Schinck of Grand Prairie, Alberta, Vance Schinck and his wife, Amanda, of Fulford, Quebec, Ryan and Connor Fletcher of Coventry, and Brooke Thomas of North Troy; his nine great-grandchildren:  Seth Demers (currently serving with the Vermont National Guard in Afghanistan), and his girlfriend Christina Crowley of Newport, Trisha, Autumn, Deztyni, Marquis, and Vincent Whipple of Providence, Kari Twing of Chelsea, and Macy and Cody Schinck of Fulford, Quebec; and one great-great-granddaughter, Emily Jane Demers of Newport.
He was predeceased by his father in 1959; his mother in 1975; his brother Harry in 1930; an infant son Calvin in 1951; and a son-in-law Bruce Twing in 1999.
The funeral was held on Monday, October 4, at the Newport Center Advent Christian Church.
After the funeral, friends were invited to follow the hearse for Mr. Whipple’s final tribute ride on the Number 12 Road past the farmstead and home he loved to his interment place at the Newport Center Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in his memory be made to the Orleans-Essex Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice, 46 Lakemont Road, Newport, Vermont 05855 in appreciation for the many kindnesses they extended to him during his illness.
