Milton J. Bowen Sr.

Milton J. Bowen Sr., 84, of Jay died on August 31, 2015.

He was born in Seymour, Connecticut, to the late Carroll and Nellie Bowen.

He served proudly in the Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. He was a lifetime member of the NRA. He had a deep appreciation of the outdoors and a love for Vermont and Alaska.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, traveling, music, dance, and spending time with his family. He was a very honest, kind, and gentle man.

He is survived by Barbara K. Bowen, his wife and the love of his life for 42 years; his daughters: Susan Dubois and her husband, Eben, and Mary; his sons: Martin and his wife, Valorie, Milton Jr. and his wife, Mary Lou, and Rich and his wife, Diane. He leaves behind many grandchildren, who he was very proud of and who he loved very much: Ryan, Isaiah, Martin, Gabriel, Juls, Audrey, Brendan, Sean, Jessica, Bobby, Jason, and Amy. He leaves two great-grandchildren: Rae Lyn and Max of Texas. He is also survived by his brother Everett Bowen and his wife, Shirley; and by a sister-in- law Angie.

Mr. Bowen was predeceased by three brothers: Claude, Rueben, and Buddy; and one sister Blanche.

obit CastonguayMargaret Grace Castonguay

Margaret Grace Castonguay, 73, of Island Pond died on September 3, 2015, after a long courageous battle with cancer, in New Haven, Connecticut.

She was born on March 5, 1942, in Island Pond to Bernard Clifford Worth and Josephine Margaret (Ball) Worth.

She graduated from Brighton High School in Island Pond. On May 21, 1964, she married Peter Castonguay who predeceased her in 1993.

She was assistant town clerk in Island Pond for over 25 years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 80 of Island Pond. She loved to travel, read, cook, and spend time at the cabin in Morgan. She enjoyed visiting with people and she never met a stranger.

She is survived by her children: Mark Castonguay and his wife, Robin, of Island Pond, and Catherine Hilliker and her husband, Todd, of Delaware; her grandchildren: Garrett Hilliker of Delaware, Kristen VanHekle and her husband, Dave, of Delaware, Shelby Castonguay, and Brandon Castonguay, both of Island Pond; her great-granddaughter Stella Grace VanHekle of Delaware; her long-time special companion Wendall Lacoss of Wallingford, Connecticut; her siblings: James Worth and Sheila of Island Pond, Gloria Gaboriault of Island Pond, and Gayle Perry of Danville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 9, at the First Congregational Church in Island Pond with the Reverend Alan Magoon officiating. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday, September 9, until the hour of the funeral. Interment will follow at Lakeside Cemetery in Island Pond.

obit DyerSarah Elizabeth (Hannah) Dyer

Sarah Elizabeth (Hannah) Dyer, 83, of Derby, died on August 31, 2015, in Newport.

She was born on July 1, 1932, in Balfour, North Carolina to Carl and Eva (Hill) Hannah.

In 1955 she married Clifford C. Dyer Sr., who predeceased her.

She loved her flower and vegetable gardens that she shared with her family and friends. She was an avid reader as she read book after book. She babysat for lots of children and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed camping and going for bike rides with her husband.

She is survived by her children: Robert Rudder and his wife, Dianna, of Canaan, New Hampshire, Iris Guyer and her husband, Russell, of Morgan, Clifford Dyer Jr. and his wife, Cindy, of Grantham, New Hampshire, Janice Charbono of Canaan, Pam Boyles and her husband, Mike, of Windsor, Missouri, and William Dyer and his wife, Lorine, of Canaan; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one brother, three sisters, her son-in-law Jerome Charbono, and a great-grandson.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Robert P. Knowles

Robert “Bob” Knowles, 88, of Belleview, Florida, died on August 18, 2015, in Ocala, Florida, after a long battle with cancer.

He was born on October 16, 1926, in Derby, a son of Wilmer and Della (Hayward) Knowles.

On September 14, 1953, he married Charlotte Broome, who survives him.

He was an inspector at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, Connecticut. He retired from Pratt and Whitney, and moved back to Derby and worked at Butterfield and Company in Derby Line. He purchased the family land and he and his wife built Char-Bo Campground in Derby. They operated it for thirty years. Before retiring, they spent winters in Florida. Upon retiring, they bought a home in, and moved permanently to, Belleview.

Mr. Knowles was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Belleview. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served in Japan during World War II.

Mr. Knowles is survived by his wife; one brother Dale Knowles of Newport; one sister Flossie Boucher of Newport; two sisters-in-law: Barbara Parenteau of Brownington, and Sissie Broome of Newport; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Wednesdsay, September 9, at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.

Leopold A. Messier, 73, of Coventry died peacefully on September 2, 2015, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on May 20, 1942, to Lucien and Clarice (Lafleur) Messier. On October 3, 1986, he married the former Marlene Carpenter who survives him.

He was a dairy farmer most of his life. He loved hunting, fishing, and helping others wherever needed. He also loved working the farm, tending to his vegetable and flower garden, and feeding the birds. Leo and Marlene loved going to the ocean in Plymouth, Massachusetts, dining on seafood dinners, especially lobster rolls.

He is survived by his wife, Marlene Messier of Coventry; his children: Melissa Harbec and her husband, Michael, of Irasburg, Joni Pion of Coventry, Anthony Little of Coventry, John Messier of Montgomery, and Theresa Stone of Swanton; his grandchildren: Matthew Harbec and his wife, Ashley, of Orleans, Mark Harbec and his fiancé, Mandi Fecteau, of Irasburg, Curtis Pion and his fiancé, Aja Emerson, of Orleans, Nicholas Pion of Derby, Deserae Pion and her companion Brent Chilafoux of Coventry, Kaya Little, and Kingston Little both of Coventry; his great-granddaughter Leila Pion of Orleans; his great-grandson Alexander Harbec of Orleans; his siblings: George Messier and his wife, Maxine, of Barton, Claire Broe and her husband, Larry, of Coventry, and Lucille Young and her husband, Larry, of West Charleston; his sister-in-law Darlene Choquette and her husband, Richard, of Coventry; his brothers-in-law: Gardner Carpenter and his companion Lisa Digman of Coventry, and Scott Carpenter and his wife, Laura, of Derby Line; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his special friend Joe Chatier.

He was predeceased by an infant brother and by his brothers-in-law: Terry and Randy Carpenter.

Hubert “Andre” Palardy

Hubert “Andre” Palardy, 81, of Newport died suddenly on August 31, 2015.

He was born on July 26, 1934, in Newport, son of E. Antonio and Vivian (Beauregard) Palardy.

He had a natural ability in electrical, plumbing, and mechanics and used these abilities in his various employments. He resided in Florida for most of his life and returned to Newport in his later years.

He was an avid follower of the weather and weather statistics. He enjoyed riding his bike around town, and he loved gardening.

He is survived by his sisters: Yolande Young and her husband, Neil, of Derby, and Jacqueline Palardy and her husband, Arthur Bloete, of Maine. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister Lorraine Economou.

Travis L. Stuart, 41, of Newport died on September 2, 2015, in Glover.

He was born on April 15, 1974, in Newport, a son of Richard Stuart Jr. and Barbara (Sweeney) Stuart now of Glover.

Mr. Stuart was a carpenter and loved crafting cedar furniture as well as many different jobs. He loved his birds and his best friend Holly Dog.

He is survived by his son Anthony Stuart of Ferrisburg; a grandson Tanner Stuart of Ferrisburg; his parents; his companion Linda Major of Newport; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He was predeceased by his brother Todd Stuart.

A family service will be held at the Albany Cemetery at a later date. A remembrance lunch will be held at the Glover Community Church on Saturday, September 12, from noon to 2 p.m., with the Reverend Evelyn Coupe officiating.

Bruce Rex Vinal, 49, of Newport died peacefully on September 3, 2015, in Newport.

He was born on January 10, 1966, in Webster, Massachusetts, to Charlotte (Sargent) Vinal and the late Raymond Vinal.

He was employed for many years as a painter for Memphremagog Rentals in Newport. He was a very kind hearted man with a great wit and sense of humor. He enjoyed watching football, the Boston Red Sox, fishing, and he loved his two dogs Sheba and Molly.

He is survived by his daughter Desiree Vinal of Lyndonville; his grandson Ryker J. Vinal, of Lyndonville; his companion Tammy Teaster of Newport; his mother, Charlotte Vinal of Newport; his siblings: David Vinal and his wife, Pat, of Whitney Point, New York, Ricky Vinal of Newport, and Linda Bowen and her husband, Michael, of West Charleston; and his aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, September 10, at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home at 37 Lake Road in Newport, with the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, September 10, from 3 p.m. until the hour of the funeral. A reception will follow immediately after the service at the funeral home.
