Elizabeth Gray Applebee
Elizabeth Gray Applebee, 95, of Newport, formerly of Morgan, died on September 10, 2014, in Newport.
She was born to Ora and Eliza (Moore) Cargill in Morgan on November 6, 1918.
She held several different job positions including being a housemother at Champlain College Whiting Hall in the 1980s, a nurses’ aide at the Orleans County Memorial Hospital, and she also worked at both of the Morgan post offices.
She enjoyed traveling and visiting her family.
In 1936, she married Martin Gray, who predeceased her in 1981.
In 1989, she married Riley Applebee, who predeceased her in 2008.
She is survived by her children: David and Jackie Gray, Brenda Jenks and her companion, Rod Blair, and Brian and his wife, Marilyn Gray; her eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and by several nieces, nephews and stepchildren.
She was predeceased by her children: James and Jane Gray; a brother, Delmar, and his wife, Marion Cargill; and by her sisters: Doris Morse and Wealthy Cargill.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 20, at 11 a.m. at the Morgan United Church, with Reverend John Genco officiating. Friends may call at the church on September 20, from 10 a.m. until the hour of the funeral. Interment will follow at the Morgan Beach Cemetery.

Everett L. “Bud” Carter
Everett L. “Bud” Carter died on September 9, 2014.
He was born in Tenafly, New Jersey, on October 12, 1920, to Everett P. “Duke” and Franke Carter.
He was a lifelong New York Giants football fan and a World War II veteran. During the war, he served in Libya and Italy for more than three years as a mine-disposal specialist with the 835th Combat Engineers.
In the 1970s, he moved to Vermont and began a career as a real estate appraiser, working throughout the state.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Margaret; his children: Victoria, and John and his wife, Sherrie; his grandchildren: Christina, Peter and Rachel; and by his great-grandson, Kaleb.
He was predeceased by his sisters: Virginia, Marion, and Eleanor; and by his wife, Jule Handwerg Carter.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 19, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Lowell, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in Westfield Cemetery.

Geraldine Wilcox Hunt
Geraldine Mae Wilcox Hunt of Derby, formerly of Newport, died on September 13, 2014.
She was born in Newport on October 26, 1919, to Gertrude Spear Wilcox and Thaddeus Wilcox.
“Deanie,” as her parents called her, graduated Valedictorian from Newport High School in 1937 and received a degree in commerce and economics from the University of Vermont (UVM) in 1941, and also a Master’s of Education from UVM in 1968.
She was executive secretary to the state commissioner of health in Burlington for seven years before moving back to Newport. During World War II, she enjoyed being a USO girl and corresponded with many soldiers around the world.
In 1947, she married Kenneth Hunt, who predeceased her in 1976. She was also predeceased by her brother, Grenville Wilcox.
She worked for the Public Health Department in Newport and then in 1961 began teaching business subjects — first at Brighton Academy, and then at North Country Union High School, retiring in 1988.
“Gerrie,” the name by which she became known after moving back to Newport, was involved in many aspects of the community. She was secretary of the Newport Women’s Club for many years and a member of the United Church of Newport. She was also on the board of directors for the North Country Concert Association, the board of directors for the Northeast Schools and Hospital Credit Union, treasurer for the Newport Country Club ladies’ league, a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Orleans-Northern Essex Retired Teachers Association, a volunteer at the hospital, as well as a member of the North Country Hospital Auxiliary, and a North Country Swinger. She was a member of Community Circle and loved traveling to see the world.
She enjoyed square dancing, round dancing, golf, crafts, and collecting dolls from her travels. She played with the gourmet bridge club and was an avid reader.
In 1964, she bought a camp on Lake Memphremagog, which was her joy. It became her full-time home in 2004 and she could be seen playing her electronic bridge, doing crossword puzzles, and reading by the water if she was not watching a Red Sox or college basketball game.
She always had at least one cat as a companion, spoiling it unmercifully.
In 1982 and 1983, her grandsons Bud and Evan were born and she immediately became an integral part of their lives, babysitting, attending their school functions, watching their sports events, playing games and cards together, and traveling with them. In 2004, her lakefront home also became home for her daughter, Pat, as well as Bud and Evan.
She is survived by Pat Vana, George “Bud” Vana IV and his girlfriend, Bethany Halliday, and Evan Vana and his fiancée, Andrea Patrikis; as well as by her cats Chessie, Marley, and KC.
Funeral services were held on September 15, in Newport. Interment followed in Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport.

Douglas Ira Kroeger
Douglas Ira Kroeger, 34, of Craftsbury Common died suddenly on September 9, 2014, in Lexington, Massachusetts.
He was born on March 25, 1980, in Lincoln, Maine, to Gayle (King) Kroeger and the late Richard D. Kroeger Jr.
He graduated from the Penobscot Valley High School in Howland, Maine.
He was a commercial construction worker and he also built and painted custom homes.
He enjoyed playing cards, kayaking, snowboarding, and other outdoor activities. He was an outgoing and free spirited individual who enjoyed his family and especially his nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his mother, Gayle Kroeger, of Craftsbury Common; his siblings: Benjamin Kroeger and his wife, Marie, of Craftsbury Common, Andrew Kroeger and his wife, Sarah, of Greensboro Bend, Annemarie Wakefield and her husband, Richard, of Statesboro, Georgia, Ruth Kroeger of Herdon, Virginia, Anita Niles and her husband, John, of Oakland, Maine, and Karen Kroeger of Craftsbury Common; his nieces and nephews: Lauren, Katelyn, Nathan, Kayla, Keagan, Kylee, Kaleb, Kendrick, Cameron, Elizabeth and Liam; and by several aunts and uncles.
He was predeceased by his father, Richard D. Kroeger Jr., in 2002.
Funeral services were held on September 13, in East Craftsbury. Interment followed in Craftsbury Common Cemetery.

Lillian G. Lockwood
Lillian G. Lockwood, 98, of Morgan died on September 11, 2014, in Newport.
She was born on September 23, 1915, in Garfield, New Jersey, to Joseph and Grace (Stiles) Torrey, and lived most of her life in Waldwick, New Jersey.
In later years, she resided with her daughters in Georgetown, Kentucky, and most recently in Morgan.
On September 24, 1949, she married Arthur W. Lockwood, who predeceased her.
During World War II, she served with the Red Cross in Hawaii, and afterward worked at the Radio Division of the United Nations.
She will be remembered for her intelligence and her sense of humor. She often commented, “I’m 98 years old but I don’t look a day over 93.”
She is survived by her three daughters to whom she was a dedicated mother: Dr. Frances Lockwood and her husband, Dr. Kenneth Partymiller, of Georgetown, Kentucky, Marcy Lockwood Peterman and her husband, Richard, of Naples, Florida, and Elaine G. Lockwood and her husband, Gerry Hunt, of Morgan; her four grandchildren: Andrew Peterman, Matthew Partymiller, Kyla Grace Lockwood Brooks, and Eliot Lockwood Brooks; two great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Ann Pope, of Ramsey, New Jersey; and by many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held in New Jersey later this year.

Lee Minerva Simpson Nelson
Lee M. Nelson, 78, of Ipswich, Massachusetts, died peacefully on September 12, 2014.
She was the wife of William T. “Bill” Nelson.
She was born in New York City, the daughter of Ruth H. Seavey and Robert McDonald Simpson.
She was raised in Garden City, Long Island, and summered in Rye Beach, New Hampshire. She graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1958 from the business school, one of the only women in her class. Longtime Wenham, Massachusetts, residents, they moved to Ipswich in retirement.
She was a member of First Church in Wenham for 40 years, managed the Wenham Exchange Gift Shop for the Wenham Village Improvement Society, and she volunteered at the Wenham Museum and the Ipswich Museum.
She was an organic gardener, photographer, and she loved clamming and lobstering. She was an avid worldwide traveler and explorer.
In addition to her husband, Bill, she is survived by two daughters: Cathleen T. Wardley and her husband, Frank, of Ipswich, and Drew R. Nelson of Marblehead, Massachusetts; two granddaughters: Elizabeth and Margaret Wardley of Ipswich; and by several nieces and nephews.
The Nelson family has summered in the Barton area for many years.
The funeral and celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 21, at First Church in Wenham. Family and friends are welcome.

Richard Anthony Stryker
Richard Anthony Stryker of Shreveport, Louisiana, formerly of Carthage, Texas, died on September 2, 2014, in Shreveport.
He was born on January 22, 1943, in San Francisco, California, to the marriage of Harry Francis and Isabella Anello Stryker Jr.
He was raised and schooled in San Francisco, graduating with the Balboa High School Class of 1960.
He was an executive manager, owner and entrepreneur of many business ventures.
His many hobbies included photography, gun collecting, hunting, cars, and watching John Wayne movies. He loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Patricia Stryker of Shreveport; his children: Richard Anthony “Tony” Stryker and his wife, Holly, of Kansas City, Kansas, David Bruce Stryker and his wife, Deanna, of Fair Oaks, California, Christie Stryker of Carthage, Jessica Jay Desrochers and her husband, Randy, of Newport, and Isabella Stryker Lisitza and her husband, Teo, of Oakland, California; his son-in-law James Berns of Carthage; his brothers: Daniel Stryker and his wife, Bethany, of Idaho, and Tom Stryker and his wife, Catherine, of Reno, Nevada; his sister Mary Wetmore and her husband, Michael, of Snohomish, Washington; his grandchildren: Patrick Scott and Jordon Scott, both of Phoenix, Arizona, Ashlynd Berns of Carthage, Baylee Stryker of Kansas City, Kansas, JoDee Stryker of Fair Oaks, California, Isabella Berns of Carthage, Justin Stryker of Kansas City, Missouri, Ava Stryker and Cohen Stryker of Oakland, Cameron Joseph Desrochers and Isaac Chase Desrochers of Newport, and Sophia Berns of Carthage; and by his special cousin, Tamera LaRossa, of Chico, California.
He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers: William “Bill” and Harry Stryker; and by a special cousin, James “Jimmy” LaRossa.
A private memorial Mass was held on September 5, in Carthage. Cremation arrangements were under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home.
