obit DeckerJohn R. Decker

John R. Decker, 87, of Barton, formerly of Greene, New York, died peacefully on October 7, 2014, in Barton.

He was born on April 25, 1927, in Butternuts, New York, to Royce and Bertha (Lamb) Decker.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served his country during World War II.

He married Marilyn Coleman. During his lifetime, he was a machine operator for Raymonds Corporation in Greene, for 32 years.

His hobbies included riding his Indian motorcycle and he also raced motorcycles. He was an avid traveler and camper, he loved country music, and he was a bowling champion in Greene and Oneonta, New York. He came to Vermont from Michigan to be near his daughters and grandchildren.

He is survived by his children: Arlean Hillis and her fiancé, Michael Labounty Sr., of West Charleston, Randy Decker of Witchita, Kansas, Elaine Henderson and her husband, Robert, of West Charleston, and Kathleen Decker and her husband, James L. Allen, of Newport; his grandchildren: Dustin, Aaron, and Neal Hillis, Cortney and Christopher Alston, and Janice Rose Allen; his sister Janice Haskell of Oneonta; and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother Clarence; and by his sister Kathrine. He was formerly married to Rose Ellen Bunting and then to Martha Russell, who he will be buried next to in Greene, and then he married Marilyn Coleman, who predeceased him.

A graveside service will be at the cemetery in Greene on October 17, at 2 p.m.

William Vincent Hall Jr., 77, of Charlestown, New Hampshire, died on Saturday, October 4, 2014, at the Elm Wood Center in Claremont, New Hampshire.

He was born in Barton on March 7, 1937, son of William Vincent Hall Sr. and Shirley (Hunt) Baird.

He was in the U.S. Air Force.

The family includes his children: Dianne Hall and Duane Hall, both of Charlestown, Debbie Fougere and her husband, Quaile, of Chester, Roberta Nunn of Penacook, New Hampshire, and Corey Nunn of Concord, New Hampshire; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his brothers: Robert A. Hall and his wife, Cheryl, of Concord, and Bruce Hall and James Baird of Penacook; his sisters: Dorcas “Dodie” Wood of Penacook, Evelyn “Effie” Brown of Franklin, New Hampshire, Sandra Elliot of Pembroke, New Hampshire, Susan Hall of Concord, Donna Richardson and her husband, Dana, of Florida, and Marilyn Collins and her husband, Kurt, of Oregon; and also many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son David Hall; and by a brother, John Baird.

A memorial service was held in Claremont on October 10. Burial will be held in the Welcome O. Brown Cemetery in Barton at a later date.

obit HoustonJohn F. “Jack” Houston Sr.

John F. “Jack” Houston Sr., 90, of Orleans died on October 7, 2014, at his home.

He was born on September 22, 1924, in Evansville, to Claude and Gladys (Marshall) Houston.

He graduated from Orleans High School in 1943.

On June 12, 1948, he married Arvilla (Billie) Smith, who survives him.

He entered the United States Army in 1943 and served as a corporal in antiaircraft artillery. He reenlisted in 1946 as a firefighter in Germany and was honorably discharged from the reserves in 1949.

Mr. Houston worked at Butterfield’s (Tivoly) until he retired in 1988. He continued his work on the Orleans Fire Department for 56 years and the Orleans Ambulance for 40 years.

He was a member of the Benevolent Order of the Elks #2155, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #798, American Legion Post #23 of Orleans, and the Valley Masonic Lodge #106 Free and Accepted Masons of Orleans.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife, Billie, of Orleans; his sons: John Houston Jr. and his wife, Liz, and Robert Houston and his wife, Diane; two grandchildren: Jennifer Riendeau and her husband, Daniel, and Tyler Houston; his sister Janine Robillard; several extended family members; lifelong friend Dale McCoy; and by his recent hunting buddy Chris Smith.

He was predeceased by his sister Mona Marotte; and by his brother Merton Houston.

Honoring his wishes, there will be no calling hours or formal services.

obit SawyerAnita Elise Sawyer

Anita Elise Sawyer, 70, of Pine City, New York, formerly of Albany, died on October 7, 2014, in Sayre, Pennsylvania.

She was born on May 18, 1944, in Newport, to Walter and Blanche (Norway) Rushlow.

Her hobbies included reading, cooking, canning, and gardening.

She is survived by her children: Alicia Albrecht and her husband, Bob, Douglas Sawyer and his wife, Missy, Jenny Storch and her husband, Steven, Thomas Sawyer and his wife, Wendy, and Shelly McNew; her brothers: Edward Rushlow and his wife, Rosalie, and Howard Rushlow; her sisters: Vernonica Griggs and Judith Schnupp and her husband, John; her brother-in-law Larry Kilborn; and by her loving companion, Kenneth White. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, George H. Sawyer; her brother Robert Rushlow; and by her sister Patricia Kilborn.

Funeral services were held on October 14, on Craftsbury Common. Interment followed in Albany Village Cemetery.
