obit roundBrian David Round

Brian David Round, 37, of Newport died unexpectedly on May 31, 2015, in Hillsboro, Florida.

He was born on February 15, 1978, in Newport to David and Theresa “Tess” (Brochu) Round.

Mr. Round graduated from North County Union High School in 1996. He played soccer, was a member of the alpine ski team, and he enjoyed other outdoor recreations. He went on to study at the University of Vermont.

He became a wonderfully talented chef who was at his best when he let his talents and creativity lead him to delicious experiments. He could improvise a five-star meal from whatever materials he had available. He worked in many locations, which included stops at the Hillsboro Club in Florida, Big Sky Ski Resort in Montana, Basin Harbor Club in Vergennes, and Junior’s and McKee’s in Winooski. He was especially close and had great friendships with the staff at McKee’s. As he did his culinary travels, he enjoyed meeting new people and exploring new locations.

He had a love and compassion for animals. He loved his pets and enjoyed the company of Mikey the dog, Mary Jane the cat, and had a special pet cat, Walter, when he was a youngster.

He was an incredibly voracious reader, often absorbing a book or more per week. He was the kind of person who preferred holding a real book in his hands instead of electronic gadgetry. He read every topic, but especially enjoyed historical novels. His recall of movies and famous movie lines was epic.

Lately he had many fishing adventures in fresh and salt water. He spent many days on the slopes on his Montana trip, and golfed at Basin Harbor. Video games, comedy shows like Family Guy, and music were also pleasures he enjoyed. A particularly special time was spent one spring working in the sugarhouse with his mom and uncle Rene. In the fall he especially liked hunting adventures in Virginia with his dad and uncles at Fort Willey.

Mr. Round was a man of few words, but on the occasion when he articulated on a subject, one had better listen as he had a wealth of information to share on nearly any topic. A conversation with “Encyclopedia Round” would always conclude with new knowledge, learning that took place, and a fresh perspective on the horizon. In his usual quiet way, you would have to listen carefully to catch his extremely intelligent sense of humor.

He is survived by his father, David Round, of Newport; his mother, Theresa “Tess” Round, and her companion, Todd Morey, of Troy; and by his brother Torrie Round of Grand Isle. He had a large number of relatives on both sides of his family, and has numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins who will miss him dearly. He also leaves the following aunts and uncles: Eva Brochu, Rita and Omar Choquette, and William and Sarah Round of Newport, Anna and Charles “Sonny” Sanville, Charles Buck, and Rene Brochu of Newport Center, Gerard Brochu and Mary and Michael Roy of Derby, Steven and Paula Brochu of Derby Line, Lea and Ron Cook of Irasburg, John Brochu and Claire Tetreault of North Troy, Alfred Brochu of Kentucky, Robert and Linda Round of Virginia, Clara Brochu of Maine, Patricia “Patty” Mann of New Hampshire, Martha Dupont of Florida, and John and Laurie Round of Illinois.

There will be a private graveside committal service for the family at a date to be determined. He will be interred with his grandmother Vera “Jan” Round, who predeceased him in January. He was also predeceased by his grandfather Franklin Round; and by his aunts: Maria Buck and Madeleine Brochu.

In lieu of flowers or donations, his family would like those inclined to purchase a book to read with a child or spend a quality day with a youngster fishing, hunting, camping, or doing another outdoor activity.
