Charles Parker Barrows
Charles Parker Barrows died on June 30, 2015, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury with his wife, Lois, at his side.
He was born in Barton on September 9, 1932, to William Parker and Virginia (Rives) Barrows.
He attended Barton Academy, graduating as Salutatorian, in 1951. For one semester, he attended Arizona State College at Tempe, after which he transferred to the University of Vermont, receiving a bachelor of arts in psychology in 1956.
On June 22, 1957, he married Lois Mansur in her hometown of Weston. In 1959, they purchased the Carl and Isabelle Bean house in Glover, where he lived until his recent admission to Union House Nursing Home in Glover.
Before graduation from college, he had worked in the family clothing store, C.A. Barrows & Son, in Barton, and later at the A&P grocery store next door. After college, he entered the banking profession, choosing not to join the family business. He rose in the ranks of the Barton Savings Bank and Trust Company, later the Howard Bank, to become assistant vice-president and administrative supervisor of the Barton branch.
During the 1980s, he began a career change by enrolling in Lyndon State College, building on his graduate credits from St. Michael’s College in guidance. He received his master of education in teaching and counseling. He did some substitute teaching but was most proud of his time as day manager and substance abuse counselor at the NEKCA detox facility in Coventry. He was also a therapy group facilitator and set up 12-step programs in the community and at the Newport lock-up. He did presentations in area schools on substance abuse and its impact on the individual and families. He later served as a child protective services caseworker for the state of Vermont. He returned to banking at the Lyndonville Savings Bank & Trust Company, until he retired, but he continued as a mentor in the AA program as a volunteer counselor.
Mr. Barrows served on many boards and committees and did extensive volunteer work. To name a few: he was treasurer and a director of the Orleans County Fair Association; consultant to Community National Bank in Derby; select board member, lister, and moderator for the town of Glover; trustee for the Orleans County Historical Society; and board member for both the Craftsbury Chamber Players and the Vermont Symphony Orchestra.
He was a lifelong member of the Barton Congregational Church and a lifelong musician of the highest order. As a child, he sang in the church choirs and became the choir director at the age of 25 when Grace Hanson was organist. Upon her retirement, he became the organist for the Barton United Church, while substituting as organist in other churches (in Glover, after the retirement of Charlotte Locke). He sang in other choral groups in Orleans County, including in Northsong and the NEK Community Chorus.
He leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Lois; and several cousins.
He was predeceased by an infant brother and by his parents.
A memorial service will be announced at a later day.

Clermont M. Fortin
Clermont M. Fortin, 69, of Derby died at his home on July 2, 2015.
He was born on August 23, 1945, to the late Emile and Germaine (Thibault) Fortin.
On September 25, 1965, he married Priscilla Erno, who survives him.
Mr. Fortin attended Canaan High School. He was a truck driver for McDermott’s Transportation.
His hobbies included brook fishing, watching hockey (the Canadians), and watching NASCAR.
He is survived by his wife, Priscilla Fortin, of Derby; his children: Marcel Fortin and his wife, Theresa, of Salcha, Alaska, Tanya Fortin and her partner, Wendell Rivers, of Coventry, and Sonya Smith and her husband, Carl, of Coventry; his grandchildren: Melanie Fortin, Nicholas Fortin, Kiara Fortin, Hailey Meehan, Natacia Sawyer, and Roger Sawyer Jr.; his great-grandchildren: Darion, Mykenna, Owen and Alayna; and by his siblings: Rejeanne Winslow and her husband, Chris, of Charleston, Danielle Sevigny and her husband, John, of Williamstown, and Linda Fortin of Enosburg.
He was predeceased by the following siblings: Viateur Fortin, Guy Fortin, and Rachel Fortin.
There will be no services.

Pierrette “Pret” N. (Martin) Marsh
Pierrette “Pret” N. (Martin) Marsh, 62, of Newport died peacefully at her home on June 30, 2015, surrounded by her loving family, after a long courageous battle with cancer.
She was born on April 29, 1953, in Derby, to Fernand and Solange Martin.
On July 15, 1995, she married her soul mate, Michael G. Marsh, who survives her.
For over 30 years she owned and operated the well-known “Pret’s Beauty Shop” in Newport. She most recently acquired her teaching degree and took great pride in developing the cosmetology program at the North Country Career Center from 2008 to 2015. She very much enjoyed her colleagues and valued the relationships she created with her students and watching them succeed.
She enjoyed gardening, golfing, cooking, kayaking, reading, and spending summers at the family camp on Seymour Lake. Her family meant the world to her and she always enjoyed their visits and family gatherings.
She is survived by her loving husband, Michael Marsh, and her three sons: Todd Pronto and his close friend, Deveney Choquette, Ryan Pronto and his girlfriend, Holly Nadeau, and Corey Pronto and his girlfriend, Amber Bennett; her stepsons: Greg Marsh and his wife, Jamie Marsh, and Ryan Marsh and his girlfriend, Amanda Staples; her mother, Solange Martin; her brother Daniel Martin and his wife, Renee; her nephew Spencer Martin; her niece Meghan Martin; her mother-in-law, Ruth Marsh; and by her grandchildren: Hunter, McKenna, Aaliah, and Morgan Marsh, and the most recent addition to the family, Cade Pronto. She is also survived by extended family: Jordan Eastman, Daniel Dobart, her husband’s brothers and sisters: Mary Lou, Paul, Barb, Randy, Gary, Donna, and Frank; and by many beloved nieces, nephews, and more.
She was predeceased by her father, Fernand Martin; her father-in-law Joe Marsh; and by her stepson Shawn Marsh.
She had an unbelievable amount of supporters and friends throughout the community. She truly blessed everyone she ever met and was considered to many as the nicest, loving, and most caring person on Earth!
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home at 4670 Darling Hill Road in Newport, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, with the Reverend Mike DeSena officiating. Interment will be at a later date at St. Edward’s Catholic Cemetery in Derby Line.

Lucille Margaret McCandless
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Lucille Margaret McCandless will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 13, at the Irasburg United Church. A reception will follow the service, at the home of Deborah and Gary Johnson.
