Tribute to Penelope “Poppy” Gregory

by Ozzie Henchel

It’s taken me a few weeks since your obituary of Penelope Gregory (July 27) to write this.  Finding the right words to describe just about the most wonderful person you’ve every known takes a while.

Even now, the words just don’t measure up to the woman we all knew as “Poppy” who inspired so many during her 83 years, even right up the end.  And what an end it was.  She defied the doctors and lived a lot longer than they gave her.  She wasn’t done inspiring, I guess, and truly loved life to its fullest.  She planned her death as if it were a party, orchestrating every little detail.  The only missing part, she told everyone, was she “didn’t have the date.”

One detail, after having a simple wooden casket made by a friend, was to plop it down on her porch and have her two young grandchildren and some of their neighborhood pals paint it according to Poppy’s request.  It turned out to be a seascape, with boats and waves and such.

She loved music and movies and the Red Sox and food and anything Greek.  And, she loved to laugh!  Most especially she loved her two sons who stood by her so lovingly while she failed, not to mention her two grandchildren and daughters-in-law.

She loved the goodness in the world and those who stood up for what was right and spoke out against what was wrong.  She, therefore, had a strong tie to the Bread and Puppet Theater for over 40 years.  In the old circus days, she’d spend her vacation time cooking for the hoards of Puppeteers, and on circus weekends could be found in the little wooden info booth by the pine forest in her bonnet decorated with flowers.

She was well read and well informed, and your conversations with her could easily have been the kind you had with a 25-year-old — so young at heart and in thought.

Her house in Boston was like a hotel with countless friends from all over the world checking in.  Poppy’s was a place to stay when passing through, but the real attraction was hanging out with her.

I am so grateful to have known her, and to have spent so much time with her over the years.  I guess that lessens the pain of her loss.  She was truly an inspiration to me, my wife Judy, and so many others; an amazing woman, the rarest of finds.
