obit CadieuxJohn Cadieux

John Paul Cadieux of Newport died peacefully on December 28, 2014, at age 90.

Born in Richford, the eldest of ten children of Pierre and Marie (Benoit) Cadieux, he was raised in North Troy. One day after his high school graduation in 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for three years in the Pacific Theater, including on Guam. He was always very proud of his service as a SeaBee.

Upon his return to North Troy in 1946, he noticed that his good friend Jack Starr’s little sister Ida had grown up quite a bit. Mr. Cadieux and Ida Mae Starr married that fall, and shared 68 years together.

He returned to work at the family business, Cadieux’s Grain Store, and upon his father’s untimely death, he became manager of the feed store at a young age.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and hiker and a charter investor in a new business in the area — Jay Peak Ski Area. He served on Jay Peak’s very first ski patrol.

After years of difficulty having a child, Mr. and Mrs. Cadieux adopted a baby boy, Peter John. Two years later, Mrs. Cadieux gave birth to daughter Barbara Jean, completing the young family. In 1962, after the sale of the feed and grain business, the family moved to Colebrook, New Hampshire, where Mr. Cadieux was hired as the manager of the Bailey feed store. Bailey was absorbed by Wirthmore, who kept him on. In 1968, Wirthmore was bought out by Agway, and Mr. Cadieux was named manager of their Newport store, meaning that he and the family could return to their beloved Northeast Kingdom, close to their large, extended families.

Mr. Cadieux remained in Newport the rest of his life; a hardworking, honest, well-respected business manager. Later, he also worked at, among other places, Space Research in Jay and, after retirement, part-time at Starr’s Transportation in North Troy.

He is survived by his loving wife and caregiver in recent years, Ida; his son Peter and his wife, Susan Brecht-Cadieux, of Plattsburgh, New York; his granddaughters Maria Cadieux of Plattsburgh and her boyfriend, Chris LeClair, Hana Cadieux of Yarmouth, Maine, and her fiancé, Scott McQuilkin, and Greta Gilmore of Melbourne, Australia, and her husband, Dylan Gilmore; numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws who have been very close; and by many friends and neighbors who have been special and helpful to him through a long and difficult decline.

He was predeceased by his parents; his daughter Barbara; and by his siblings: Laurent “Peter” Cadieux, Madeline “Peanut” Cushing, Valida Spooner and Yvonne Briggs.

Memorial services were held on January 3, in Newport.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Orleans Essex VNA and Hospice or the American Legion Post #28 in North Troy, where Mr. Cadieux was a continuous member for over 70 years.

obit macieArland Donald Macie

Arland Donald Macie of Orleans died on December 19, 2014, at the age of 86.

He resided at the Bel-Aire Health Care Center in Newport for the past two years.

He was born on January 1, 1928, in Irasburg. He was the oldest child of Gilbert Henry Macie and Lillian Olive Coapland. His younger sisters were Berdina (Macie) Maxwell, and Beverly Macie. He lived most of his life in Vermont and was known to say, “There is no better place to be than in Vermont.”

In 1947, Mr. Macie purchased a farm with his parents in Coventry. In 1952, he was drafted into the United States Army where he served in the Korean War. In the midst of the conflict, he ran communication wires for 21 months. He then remained in the Reserves for a few more years. Upon returning home, he renewed his friendship with the love of his life, Kathryn Janet Norris, whom he had met at the Eureka Grange 480 in Coventry.

They were married on June 28, 1953, and soon after they had four children. The most important values of Mr. Macie’s life were God, family, and friends. Matthew 22:37-39: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” Mr. Macie lived this well.

Mr. Macie was baptized as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on March 30, 1963. Together with his wife and family, they were sealed together for time and all eternity in the St. George Temple in Utah in 1964. He served in many church callings throughout his membership. These are a few of the highlights: In June of 1998, with his wife, they served a mission in Texas and then toured the United States visiting many of the temples built at that time; in April of 2000, he was called as president of the Newport branch, to serve as a leader of the people he loved; and in 2002, he served as an ordinance worker for the Montreal, Quebec, temple. He enjoyed all of his callings and served willingly. But most of all he took his calling as a home teacher very seriously, for he visited individual families every month, faithfully, to see if their needs were met. Many times, he gave his time and love in furnishing firewood or by any other means he could.

Throughout his life, he was active in his community with his wife. To name a few, in the Grange, and in the Boy Scouts Parents Club. But one thing he loved more than most was to be a member of The North Country Swingers. He started dancing in 1973 and graduated in 1974. He danced until 2009, approximately. He would not miss a Monday night dance no matter how hard he had worked that day. He loved the people and good clean fun.

Most people knew Mr. Macie for his life of hard work. He loved Vermont and the land he owned and worked along with his beautiful wife. He was a farmer in addition to working at Ethan Allen and Indian Head. He retired from Newport Furniture Parts. He ran a chainsaw until he had a stroke two years ago. He would not let his wife get cold.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kathryn Janet (Norris) Macie of Coventry. The heritage he will be missed by includes his children and their spouses and families: his daughter Terry Ashman and her daughter Virginia; his daughter Debra Cobb and her children: Nathan, Arla, Deanna, Patience, and Justin; his son Richard and his wife, Linn Macie, and their children: Debbie, Heath, Jacob, Derrick, and Allison; his daughter Sue and her husband, Joseph Simpson, and their children: Alina, Desiree, and Logan; and by his 15 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents and siblings.

We honor your great example and will always love you. Till we meet again.

A graveside service with full military honors will be held in the spring at the Irasburg Cemetery in Irasburg.

obit MasonTerrill D. Mason Jr.

Terrill D. Mason Jr., 73, died peacefully at home in North Troy, on December 26, 2014, after a long battle with cancer.

He was born in North Troy, to Terrill and Arline Mason, in 1941.

During his childhood and teens, he worked on local farms helping with haying and chores after going to school and during summers. He later worked for the Blair Veneer Mill, until he joined the U.S. Army in 1963. After doing basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, he was stationed in Korea for about 13 months. He ended up at the Atlanta Army Depot in Forest Park, Georgia.

On February 12, 1966, he married Elizabeth Jean Mason, in a ceremony at the Army base. When discharged from the U. S. Army in August of 1966, he went to work for Tri State Tractor Company in Atlanta, Georgia, as a heavy equipment mechanic until August of 1972, when the couple moved to North Troy, to be near his family.

Mr. Mason started working for Desmarais Equipment in September of 1972 as a mechanic and continued there until his retirement in July of 2002.

He was a great mechanic. He rebuilt a Massey Ferguson tractor from bottom to top so he could use it for tractor pulling at the fairs. His tractor has been admired by many people at the tractor pulls.
