Bernard H. (Bucky) Harris

Bernard H. (Bucky) Harris, 94, of Island Pond died on February 1, 2013, in St. Johnsbury.

He was born March 2, 1918, in Lyndonville, a son of Burton and May (Farrow) Harris.  On March 16, 1941, he married Eleanor Hurlbert, who predeceased him.  He graduated from Brighton High School and attended Syracuse University.  In 1941 he entered the United States Army where he served his country during World War II.  He was employed on the Canadian National Railroad where he was a conductor for 43 years.

He coached Little League and Babe Ruth, and he enjoyed playing golf and baseball in his earlier years.  He watched his favorite team, the Red Sox, on television.

Mr. Harris was a member of the American Legion Post #80 of Island Pond and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #10137 in Bushnell, Florida, and he was a Masonic member in Virginia.  He was also local chairman of the United Transportation Union for several years.

He is survived by his children:  Greg Harris of London, Ohio, Scott Harris of Hilliard, Ohio, and Holly Vallieres of Island Pond; by eight grandchildren; and by five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two sons, Stanley Harris in 1965 and Cary Harris in 1991.

Friends may call on Thursday, February 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home at 1199 Railroad Street in Island Pond, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 8, with Pastor Muriel O’Gorman officiating.  Spring interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery with full military honors.

William “Bill” Edward Heinchon

William “Bill” Edward Heinchon

William “Bill” Edward Heinchon, 88, of Craftsbury died on Monday, January 28, 2013, in Barton.

He was born on August 16, 1924, in Brewster, New York, a son of Raymond and Blanche (Reed) Heinchon.

He married Pearl Williams, who predeceased him, and later married Alice Cole Ryan, who also predeceased him.  He graduated from Brewster High School in Brewster where he was an all-star baseball player.

Mr. Heinchon was a farmer all his life.  He farmed in Milltown, New York, and moved to Vermont in 1970, where he owned and operated a farm in Walden, now known as Walden Farms.  He later owned a farm in East Hardwick, now known as Hi Hope Farm, and he eventually moved to Craftsbury in the late ’80s, where he started the Hi Hope Greenhouse; it was there that he was known as the Tomato Man.  He was an avid sports fan and he especially followed the Boston Red Sox and Celtics.  He loved spending time with his family and he enjoyed bowling.

He is survived by his sons:  Richard Heinchon and his wife, Liz, of Techachapi, California, and Jamie Heinchon of Wheelock; stepchildren:  Ann Gilcris and her husband, Larry, of Natural Bridge, New York, Jeanne Locke and her husband, Paul, of Springfield, Marvin Ryan and his wife, Lois, of Craftsbury, Kathleen Ryan of El Prado, New Mexico, Laureen Ryan of N. Kingstown, Rhode Island, Paul Ryan of Craftsbury, and Anita Caraballo and her husband, Pedro, of N. Kingstown; his daughter-in-law Carolyn Ryan of Craftsbury; and by his 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sister Elaine Johnson of Pawling, New York; and by several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his son Donald Heinchon; his stepchildren:  William Ryan, and Nancy Martell and her husband, Al; his brother Raymond Heinchon; his sister Dorthea Walter; and by his brother-in-law Howard Williams.

Funeral services were held on February 1 in Craftsbury.  Spring interment will be in Craftsbury Village Cemetery.

Violet J. Rice

Violet J. Rice, 89, of Derby died on February 2, 2013, at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born August 5, 1923, in Canada, a daughter of William and Jane (Duncan) Alexander.  On September 5, 1942, she married Kenneth Rice, who predeceased her on October 23, 2010.

Mrs. Rice was employed in the shipping department at Union Butterfield in Derby Line, where she retired in 1986.

She loved her dogs Buffy, Casey, and Cubby.  She also enjoyed reading and doing word puzzles.

She is survived by her daughter Wendy Corkins and her husband, Robert, of Derby; by her grandchildren:  Shari L. Hancock and her husband, Randy, of Coventry and Jennifer J. Daigle and her husband, Rene, of Troy; by her great-grandchildren:  Travis Letourneau and Ashley Daigle; and by her sister Ruby Falkner of Ontario, Canada.

She was predeceased by a sister, Helen Mosher, and by a half sister, Esther LeBaron.

Funeral services were held on February 5 at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport, with the Reverend Frank Beaty officiating.  Spring interment will be in the Derby Line Cemetery.

Norman E. St. Onge

Norman E. St. Onge, 52, died suddenly on Sunday, January 20, 2013, in Bentonville, Arkansas.

He was born in Newport on September 24, 1960, beloved son of Archie and Theresa St. Onge of Newport.  He attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from North Country Union High School in 1978.  He worked for several years as a trucker for Ethan Allen in Orleans, and also for Walmart in Bentonville.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Tina, of Bentonville; his two sons:  Lucien and his wife, Tricia, of Brownington and Christopher and his wife, Christina, of Bentonville; by his two daughters:  April and her husband, Douglas Messier, of Bentonville, and Natalie and her husband, Rodney Birchfield, of Bella Vista, Arkansas; by his mothers- and father-in-law, Marilyn Messier and Bruce and Joanne Messier; and by his seven grandchildren:  Adam, Jeffrey, Jacob, Jesse, Jasmyne, Karson and Anna.  He is also survived by his brothers:  Denis of Stanstead, Quebec, George and his fiancée, Gloria, of Newport Center, Michael and his wife, Joanne, of Newport, and Roger and his fiancée, Tammy, of St. Paul, North Carolina; by his sisters:  Fran Bourassa and her husband, Norm, of Jay and Chris Bumps and her husband, Jim, of Newport; and by several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister Madeleine.

A funeral service will be held at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport on Saturday, February 9, at 11 a.m.

Eleanor “Ellie” C. Steuwe

 Eleanor “Ellie” C. Steuwe, 92, died on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, New Hampshire.

She was born October 25, 1920, in Jersey City, New Jersey, a daughter of William and Eleanor (Jasco) Lapham.

She attended Jersey City Teacher’s College in Jersey City and also attended Pace Institute in New York City.  She was married to Joseph B. Mathis III in Chico, California, in 1943.  Her husband was a B-17 bomber pilot in World War II and was killed in 1944.  In September of 1947 she married Arthur H. Steuwe of Jersey City, who was also in World War II in the Signal Corps.  He died in 1993.

When she lived in East Charleston, for 20 years, she was a volunteer in the East Charleston Elementary School; a member of the East Charleston School Board; trustee in the Plymouth Congregational Church in East Charleston; and a volunteer at North Country Hospital in Newport.  Upon moving to Randolph in 1997, she became a volunteer at Gifford Memorial Hospital’s Thrift Shop, a deacon in the Bethany Congregational Church, a volunteer in the ELF Program at the Randolph Elementary School and a volunteer at the Randolph Area Senior Center where she also served on the board of directors.  She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, painting and reading.  She would like everyone to know that she very much loved the town of Randolph and all of her friends and co-workers.  She also leaves many friends behind in East Charleston.

She is survived by four sons:  Joseph Mathis of Forked River, New Jersey, Roy A. Steuwe of East Charleston, Arthur H. Steuwe Jr. and his wife, Janice, of Belmont, Michigan, and David J. Steuwe and his wife, Jane, of Rockingham; a daughter, Nancy Smith, and her husband, Kenneth “Smitty,” of Randolph; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at a date and time to be announced later.
