Beverly Lucille Clark

The death of Beverly Lucille Clark, 92, of Derby on February 20, 2013, is announced with heavy hearts filled with happy memories.

Mrs. Clark was born in Glens Falls, New York, on February 28, 1920, the eldest daughter of the late Bernard and Lucille Moses.  On May 1, 1946 she married Charles Clark and had five children. Mr. Clark predeceased her in 1962.  Her longtime companion, Arthur Bacon, also predeceased her in 1982.

She is survived by her very close and special granddaughter Kelly Paul and family; her daughters Sandra Foster and Amy Varney; her sons Donald Clark and Gary Clark; by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by her sister Virginia Schies of New York and by nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son Denis Clark and her sister Barbara Stranahan.

Mrs. Clark’s infectious laugh, beautiful smile, and wonderful sense of humor will be missed by all.  She will be greatly missed by her loving and caring family at the Derby Green Nursing Home.

There will be no visiting hours.  A celebration of Mrs. Clark’s life will be held on Thursday, February 28, starting at 1 p.m. with family and friends and the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating a short service starting at 2 p.m. at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 4670 Darling Hill Road in Newport.  A spring burial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Friends may make contributions in memory of Mrs. Clark to the Derby Green Nursing Home Activities Fund, P.O. Box 24, Derby, Vermont 05829.

Fred Cushing
Fred Cushing

Fred Pierce Cushing Sr.

 Fred Pierce Cushing Sr. of Jay died on February 21, 2013.

He was born in Brockton, Massachusetts, on November 17, 1931.  His father was Walter David Cushing, and his mother was Helen Emma (Pierce) Cushing.

He served his country in the U.S. Army before and during the Korean War.  He was a teacher at the Guided Missile School in Fort Bliss, Texas, and later helped establish the Eastern Air Defense Command.  After the service, Mr. Cushing worked for several large manufacturing corporations as a machinist, plant engineer, engineering manager, production manager, plant superintendent, and plant manager.

After retirement, he served his town of Jay, as town moderator, chairman of the listers, and zoning administrator for many years, which resulted in many sessions with Jay Peak for permitting process.  He was also a member of the Northeastern Vermont Development Association.

Mr. Cushing was very active at the North Troy Congregational Church, serving as a deacon, trustee, and head usher for several years.  He enjoyed playing cards, bus trips, and visiting with his many friends at the senior meal sites.

Fred is survived by his wife and best friend of 60 years, Edna Cushing, of Jay; by his six children and their families:  Mary and Bill Harris, Fred Pierce Cushing Jr., Nancy and John Sparacio, David and Kristine Cushing, Steve and Kim Cushing, and Chris and Kerri Cushing.  He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; one great-grandson; his sisters:  Marge Vierra and Helen Cushing-Raum; and by many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and by a baby brother.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, at the North Troy Congregational Church with the Reverend Richard O’Hara and the Reverend Rick Shover officiating.  A luncheon will follow at the East Side Restaurant in Newport, beginning at 4 p.m.

Mahlon H. Gonyaw

Mahlon Gonyaw of St. Johnsbury died on Saturday, February 23, 2013, at North Country Hospital in Newport at the age of 85.  He had suffered a stroke on December 6 last year and received wonderful care at the Bel Aire Nursing Home in Newport since mid-January.

He was born in East Albany on December 10, 1927, and grew up in Morgan where he attended school.  Mr. Gonyaw was the youngest of four children born to Mitchell and Sadie (Noyes) Gonyaw.  He married Madeline Driver of West Charleston on June 1, 1952.  She was the love of his life.

In his working days, Mr. Gonyaw was a well-respected dozer/backhoe operator and worked on the construction of area roads and much of Interstate 91.  He served in the Army Air Forces at the close of World War II and was a member of the American Legion post in Hardwick.  He and his wife were hard-working members of the Loyal Order of Moose #1779.

He is survived by his wife, Maddy; by five children:  Bryce Gonyaw and his wife, Debbie, of Danville, Clair Gonyaw and Judy of Concord, Dixie Vallie and her husband, R.J., of Williston, Diane Covell and her husband, Jim, of St. Johnsbury, and Vicki Langone and her husband, Rob, of Longmeadow, Massachusetts; by three grandchildren:  Heather, Megan, and Adam; two great-grandsons; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers:  Marvin, who lived in East Charleston, and Roland, who lived in Morgan, as well as a sister just a month ago, Mildred Major of Island Pond.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, March 2, at the Moose Lodge at 2388 Portland Street in St. Johnsbury.  The gathering will begin at 10 a.m.  At 11 a.m. there will be a commemorative service followed by a light luncheon.

Mr. Gonyaw loved animals and was concerned for their welfare.  Please consider making a memorial contribution to the Pope Memorial Frontier Animal Shelter, 502 Strawberry Acres Road, Newport Vermont 05855; or to any animal shelter of your choice.

Sayles Funeral Home of St. Johnsbury is assisting the family with cremation arrangements.

 Clarence E. Maker

Clarence E. Maker, 84, of Newport died on February 22, 2013, in Newport.

He was born June 9, 1928, in Lowell, Massachusetts, a son of Alan and Gertrude (Arland) Maker.

He married Cecile Young, who predeceased him.  He entered the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II.  He was a machine operator for Ethan Allen Manufacturing, and he was also a truck driver.

Mr. Maker was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #798, the American Legion Post #21 of Newport, and he attended the Meeting Place in Newport.  His hobbies included hunting and gardening.  He always had a smile on his face.

He is survived by his daughter Susan Powell of Asheville, North Carolina; by his granddaughter Kayla Bernier, also of Asheville; his foster son Dennis Fields, state representative from Sanbornton, New Hampshire; and by several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on May 24 at 1 p.m. at the East Haven Cemetery in East Haven with full military honors.

John (Jackie) (Jackson) William Warner

John (Jackie) (Jackson) William Warner of Lowell died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on February 23, 2013.

He was born September 29, 1933, in Lowell to Wallace and Lilis Warner.

Mr. Warner lived a full life, venturing into many endeavors.  As a young man, he worked with the family’s sawmill.  He served a short stint in the U.S. Air Guards.  He also worked at the asbestos mines.  In 1958 he attended a trade school in Chicago, Illinois, to become a radio and TV technician.

He was a lineman and master electrician and owned and operated Warner’s Electric.  He was also a truck driver.

Mr. Warner enjoyed working in his garden, and he owned his own plane.  He loved giving rides to anyone who wanted one.  He bowled for many years on a league with his son Shawn.

He leaves behind a large loving family, including his children:  Daniel Warner and his wife, Jeanie, of East Albany and their children Dakota and Jade Warner; Marcia Warner and her partner, Mardy Pratt, and her children:  Kevin and Stephine Uhlendorff and Caleb Warner; and Shawn Warner and his wife, Shannon, and their children Adam, Samantha, and Johnie.  He also leaves behind a granddaughter-in-law, Danielle LaRoe; two great-grandchildren:  Glycerine Uhlendorff and Gabriel LaRoe;  his former wife, Lois Starr, of North Troy; his sisters and brother:  Michael (Mickey) Warner of Lowell, Beth Potter and her husband, Brad, of Ryegate, and Shirleen Dolan of Morrisville; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, and by two brothers, Lawrence (Lonnie) Warner and Winston Warner.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 1, at the Lowell Congregational Church with the Reverend David DiZazzo officiating.  Friends may call at the church on March 1 from noon until the hour of the funeral. Spring interment will be in Mountainview Cemetery in Lowell.
