obit CallowayRoger W. Calloway Sr.

Roger W. Calloway Sr., 72, of Newport died on November 28, 2013, in Newport, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on August 8, 1941, in Newport Center, a son of Blaine and Natalie (Armstrong) Calloway.  On June 18, 1960, he married Betty Hardy, who survives him.

He was a truck driver for Gray’s Paving.  He loved watching NASCAR, wrestling, going camping, hunting, having family cookouts, and telling stories.

Mr. Calloway was a member of the American Legion Post #28 in North Troy.

He is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Betty Calloway of Newport; his children:  Darlene Gaudette of Orleans, Roger Calloway Jr. and his fiancée, Lori Collins, of Derby, Dwayne Calloway and his fiancée, Tracy Archer, of Newport, Debbie Perry of Derby, and Donna Malshuk and her husband, Dennis, of Newport; his grandchildren:  Dwayne Jr., Scott Perry, Travis Calloway, Amber Perry, Tonya Calloway, Jacob Calloway, Desiree Malshuk, Dakota Calloway, and Mykayla Malshuk; his five great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Calloway Sr., and his wife, Ilene, of Orleans; a sister, Priscilla Simpson, of Orleans; a stepbrother, Russell Calloway, of Ottawa; his special niece Linda Bennett and her husband, Norman, of Coventry; several nieces and nephews; a special friend, John Pelletier, of North Tory; and by his beloved dog, Buddy.

He was predeceased by Betty Scott and Louise Dionne, and by a special friend, Hillary Baker.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 5, at 2 p.m., at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, at 37 Lake Road in Newport, with the Reverend Paul Prince officiating.

obit maloneyLorraine J. Maloney

Lorraine J. Maloney, 84, of Newport Center died early Friday morning, November 29, 2013, at Bel-Aire Nursing Home after a very long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

She was born on April 19, 1929, in Newport, the only child of the late Herbert and Florence (Selby) Tute.  She grew up in Newport Center and graduated from Newport Center High School, Class of 1947, as valedictorian.

She enjoyed playing piano, throughout her life.  She taught piano lessons for students for many years.  She was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Newport for many years and an organist there for 25 years.  She grew up in her home with her parents, where the U.S. Postal Office was located.  She had firsthand knowledge of the postal service and eventually became a postal clerk.  In 1975, she was sworn in as postmaster in Newport Center.  She retired in 1992.  She was very active with the National League of Postmasters, and the Retired League of Postmasters.

Mrs. Maloney was an active citizen in Newport Center.  She was on the zoning and planning boards, and she was an auditor and a justice of the peace for many years.  She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter in Troy and later in Newport.  She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Newport.  She enjoyed traveling, camping, reading, arts and crafts, playing darts, and animals.

In her retirement years, she was a volunteer for many organizations, including:  RSVP, North Country Hospital, Traffic Safety One, and Compassionate Friends.  She was very instrumental in forming the Victim’s Assistance Program.  Mrs. Maloney had a big heart and a great smile.  She would help anyone who was in need, and she really enjoyed visiting with people.

One of her favorite jobs was bookkeeping.  She enjoyed working with numbers.  She was a bookkeeper for a few years with building contractor Malcolm Pickel, and in earlier years for the Edwin Earl Insurance Co.

She was married on October 27, 1947, to Daniel Maloney.  They had two children:  Thomas of Newport and Betty of Newport Center.  A son, Michael Maple, died in 1973.  Mr. Maloney died in 1989.

Her parents, and a very special aunt, Rotha Schayltz, and family friend Larry Allard also predeceased her.  She had many friends through the years, which included Thelma Moulton, Betty Murphy, and Marilyn Forbes, as well as her retired postmaster friends:  Betty Olsen, Carletta Legacy, Millie Fournier, and Sylvia Cramer, to name a few.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 4, at 11 a.m., at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, at 37 Lake Road in Newport, with the Reverend Cameron Miller officiating.  Spring interment will be held at the Newport Center Cemetery.  A reception will follow the service at the Elks Lodge in Derby.

Mrs. Maloney had a great love for animals, especially her beloved cat Buster.  Flowers are nice, but her wish was for contributions to be made to the Friends of Felines Foundation, P.O. Box 1316, Newport, Vermont 05855.

obit raffertyBrenda J. Rafferty

 Brenda J. Rafferty, 57, of Derby died suddenly on November 24, 2013, in Newport.

She was born September 18, 1956, in Newport, to Howard and Joyce (Perkins) Blanchard.

Ms. Rafferty was a former member of the Barton EMT, and she volunteered for the Pope Memorial Frontier Animal Shelter, North Country Hospital and Northeast Kingdom TV.

She is survived by her children:  Jessica Poirier and her husband, Jeff, of Glover, Christy Loukes and her husband, Karl, of Newport, Jason Rafferty and William Rafferty of Newport; her grandchildren:  Holly, Cody, Alexis, Hannah, Mitchell, Chantal, Kloie, and Karl Jr.; and by her siblings:  Eugene Childers and his wife, Jean, of Brandon, Michael Blanchard of Orleans, and Susan Mugford and her husband, Craig, of East Montpelier.

Funeral services were held on December 2 at the New Hope Bible Church in Irasburg, with Pastor George Lawson officiating.

Reynold L. Paquette

Reynold L. Paquette, 83, of Newport died on December 1, 2013, in Newport.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m., on Friday, December 6, at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, at 4670 Darling Hill Road in Newport.  Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, December 7, at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Derby Line, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated.  Spring interment will be in St. Theresa’s Cemetery in Orleans.
