Wayne Linwood Barney

Wayne Linwood Barney, 56, of Ferdinand died on May 1, 2012, at his home.
He was born on December 24, 1955, in Island Pond, a son of Linwood and Beulah (Darnell) Barney.
Mr. Barney formerly was employed by Ethan Allen Manufacturing in Island Pond. He was a member of Brighton Baptist Church in Island Pond. He loved reading his bible, going to church and singing in the choir. He enjoyed helping people in need.
He is survived by his brother, the Reverend Roland “Butch” Barney and his wife, Jocelyne, of Island Pond; by his two sisters: Wanda Ovitt and her husband, Alan, of Lithia Springs, Georgia, and Goldie Buffi of Brownington; by his nieces and nephews: Bernard Barney of Hartford, Connecticut, Cynthia Bowen of Dalton, Georgia, Terrie Ann Walker of Simi Valley, California, Robert Leigh of Carrolton, Georgia, Shawnda O’Keefe and her husband, Roger, of Ferdinand, Frankie Lee Buffi of Brownington, and Lance Buffi of Brownington; by a great-nephew, Jacob O’Keefe, of Ferdinand; and by five other great-nieces and -nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Leon Barney, and his brother-in-law Frank Buffi.
Funeral services were held on May 5 in Island Pond. Interment will be held at the Lakeside Cemetery in Island Pond at a later date.

Lucille A. (Dawson) Cloutier
Lucille A. (Dawson) Cloutier, 76, died on Saturday, April 28, 2012, from a stroke while awaiting a brain operation at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
Ms. Cloutier was born on February 11, 1936, in Barton, and was raised in Orleans County where she attended grade school and high school, after which she commuted by train to Massachusetts for tech school to become a secretary.
By the late 1950s, she was married and living in the Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire, area as a new mother. In 1961, the family relocated to Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. Ms. Cloutier lived in Wolfeboro until a job change in the mid 1980s had her moving into the Merrimack, New Hampshire, region. After 20 years, her retirement in the early 2000s had her moving back home. She loved being near the city but always claimed that Wolfeboro was “home,” no matter where else she hung her hat.
She is survived by a daughter, Juliann Cloutier Jacobs; a son, Joseph V. Cloutier Jr.; and by two granddaughters: Mikayla B. Jacobs and Calysta T. Jacobs.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 258 South Main Street, in Wolfeboro, on Sunday, May 13 at 2 p.m.

Thomas Joseph Dowd

Thomas Joseph Dowd, 76, of Binghamton, New York, died on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, in the company of loving family members after waging a quiet and courageous struggle with kidney cancer.
Born October 15, 1935, the son of Irish immigrants James and Catherine Dowd, he was the oldest of three children and he remained proud of his Boston roots and Irish heritage.
Mr. Dowd was predeceased by his wife Nancy Whitcomb Dowd in 2007. They centered their life around raising their four adoring children; sons Michael, Christopher and Patrick, and daughter Maura.
He was the loving brother of James and Mary who reside in the Boston area.
Mr. Dowd served as a MP in the Air Force from 1954 until 1957. Upon his discharge he entered the health care industry and rapidly rose within the field to serve as CEO of numerous hospitals in Vermont and New York, including North Country Hospital in Newport. Among his professional activities, he was a past president of the Vermont Hospital Association, board chairman of the Northeastern New York Hospital Council, a director of Fulton County National Bank, preceptor of Union College Graduate Program of Healthcare, and diplomat of the American College of Healthcare Executives. A charismatic leader, he greatly enhanced the quality and depth of health care service.
In their later years, Mr. and Mrs. Dowd found great joy in spending time with their children and their families, especially as the blessing of grandchildren came into their lives. Mr. Dowd was a proud man, at times an irascible and always opinionated man, who loved to engage in a good debate around the kitchen table. He will be greatly missed, and his friends and family take comfort in knowing that he is reunited with his wife. Those who gather to mourn his loss should remember him as his family will; a strong man with such an underlying tender soul whose deep voice and personality brought life to every room he entered.
Surviving Mr. Dowd are Michael and his wife, Elicia; Christopher and his wife, Tricia; Maura and her husband, David; and Patrick and his wife, Aimee; his siblings: James and Mary Dowd; and his grandchildren: Chrystal, Courtney, Andrew, Gabrielle, Sadie, Max, Oliver, Jake, Harry, Alexa and Elijah.
A funeral Mass was held in Saratoga, New York, on May 5.

Sharon Ann Hunt

Sharon Ann Hunt, 58, of St. Johnsbury died on April 30, 2012, in St. Johnsbury.
She was born on December 13, 1953, in Newport, a daughter of Ellis and Marion (Midge) Orne Hunt. She graduated from Green Mountain Union High School in Chester, and the College of St. Joseph the Provider in Rutland in the Class of 1976.
She taught for two years at the Green Mountain Union High School and for two years in Hardwick as a special educator. She was currently teaching at Gilman-Lunenburg School District until her illness. She taught in special education for over 35 years and she loved all the children and enjoyed working with them. She also taught chorus and music to various groups, and loved traveling to Maine and Florida.
She was a fan of auto racing and football, especially the New England Patriots.
In 1990, she became a member of the Emerald Rebekah Lodge #33 of Waterbury Center. In 1994, she became an associate member of the Olive Branch #4 of St. Johnsbury and the Noble Grand Olive Branch from 1995 to 1996. She also joined the Rebekah Assembly of Vermont in 1997 and was district deputy president from 1998 to 1999. She served as an assembly president during the 2001 to 2002 term, and in 2002 she attended the pilgrimage to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C., and presented the wreath for the state of Vermont. She was also the Vermont representative of the International Association of Rebekah Assemblies in 2002 in Wichita, Kansas. She was a member of the International Choir at several other assemblies and was also a state soloist. She was a trustee at Gill Odd Fellows in Ludlow for several years.
She is survived by her mother Midge Hunt of Barton; by her brother Dennis Hunt and his wife, Lorraine, of Westford, Massachusetts; and by numerous cousins, aunts, and uncles. She is also survived by very close friends Joan and Bobby Ballou of Cocoa, Florida, and by Glenda Ramey of Montpelier.
Funeral services were held on May 5 in Newport.

Bradley Scott Luther
Bradley Scott Luther, 89, died on Friday, May 4, 2012, at home.
He was born on May 15, 1922, in Canaan, to Ruby Almeda (Haynes) and George Newton Luther. He lived his earliest years in Beecher Falls, moving to East Hardwick as a young boy.
Mr. Luther was proud of his World War II service in the Army Air Force as an aerial engineer from 1942 to 1945, where he served as an airplane and engine mechanic. He obtained the rank of sergeant and was honored with the American Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
On February 8, 1945, he married Ardys Janet LaMonda in Woodsville, New Hampshire. They lived their entire married life in East Hardwick where they raised four children.
On returning from the service, he partnered with his father to run the East Hardwick Hardware Store. Later he ran Luther’s Plumbing and Heating where he was joined by his son, Edward.
Mr. Luther served his community as a 60-year member of the Caledonia Grange #9 in East Hardwick, with the East Hardwick Water and Fire District, and as a trustee of the Sanborn Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife; his four children and their spouses: Cheryl Ann (Luther) and Gary Michaels of Salem, Massachusetts, Edward Dale and Pamela (Adams) Luther of East Hardwick, Gail (Luther) and David O’Brien of Shaftsbury, and Douglas Scott and Elaine (Guth) Luther of Walden; and by two sisters: Gleigh Richardson of Erie, Colorado, and Calista Lawson of Sebring, Florida. He lived to know eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: Pinon Jonesku of Salem, Massachusetts, Justin David and Julie (Huckins) O’Brien and Addison of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, Master Gunnery Sergeant Nathan George and Melissa (Montgomery) Luther, Tessa Louise and Ella Ardys of Terawa Terrace, North Carolina, Erin O’Brien Wilson and Adam Wilson and Keva of Storrs, Connecticut, Nicole Adams and Brett Hodgdon, Grace and Gavin of Jericho, Nathan Bradley and Jennifer (Kelleher) Michaels of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, and Meghan and Emily Luther of Walden. He was predeceased by his brother Burleigh.
Graveside services were held on May 7 in East Hardwick.

Joan Hemingway MacDonald

Joan Hemingway MacDonald, 90, died on Thursday, May 3, 2012, in North Hatley, Quebec.
She was born to the Honorable George and Mary (Walker) Hemingway on January 9, 1922, in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England.
Educated in England, she was an active member of her political family. Joining the Woman’s Auxiliary Air Force during World War II, she worked in telecommunications and was stationed at Holme-on-Spalding-Moor in England. It was there that she met and married her beloved husband of 65 years, Flight Lieutenant Malcolm (Mac) W. MacDonald, DFC, a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force. In 1946, as a war bride, Mrs. MacDonald traveled to Canada on the post-war Queen Mary with her infant son, John.
Published in numerous magazines and newspapers, she was an accomplished freelance writer. She authored and published three books: The Stanstead College Story, The Owls Cry, and most recently, in 2002, Our Mornings May Never Be.
After raising her three children, she entered a career as development officer for Stanstead College, a position she held and enjoyed until her retirement.
Eternally creative, she was a voracious reader, and she loved working in her English garden, oil painting, music, the theater and travel. She enjoyed wonderful friendships and was a great friend to all who knew her.
She was exceptional in giving to her community. She served with the Stanstead Historical Society, as president of the North Country Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, Border Curling Club and Rotary International where she worked and traveled along side her husband when he was District Governor.
Closest to her heart was her family. As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and aunt, she gave of herself lovingly and tirelessly.
She is survived by her children: John MacDonald and his wife, Lise, of Swanton, Heather MacDonald Greene and her husband, Douglas, of Rancho Mirage, California, and Keith MacDonald of Phoenix, Arizona; her grandchildren: Katie MacDonald and Derek MacDonald, both of South Burlington; as well as by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Malcolm (Mac) W. MacDonald; her infant son Donald; and by her brother John Hemingway and his wife, Mary, and their son, Martin.
Services will be held on Wednesday, May 16, at 2 p.m. at Christ Church, 550 Rue Dufferin, in Stanstead, Quebec. The family will be present at Christ Church at 1 p.m. to receive condolences. A reception will immediately follow at The Colby-Curtis Museum.
The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made in her memory to The Connaught Christian Home, 77 Main Street, North Hatley, Quebec, J0B2C0.
George N. Testut

George Nelson Testut, 79, of Island Pond died on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, in his winter home in Brooksville, Florida, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with kidney disease.
He was born on July 12, 1932, in Somerville, New Jersey, to Gustave Testut and Mary Korona Testut. He came to Island Pond as an infant and attended St. Mary’s School. As a young adult he worked in the Roxie Theater in town and was fond of reminiscing about his adventures running the film projectors and growing up in Island Pond. He played basketball at St. Mary’s High School, enjoyed tennis, golf, shuffle board, and was known to shoot a good game of pool. He spent the majority of his working life as a conductor and brakeman for the Canadian National Railroad until his retirement in 1989.
Mr. Testut loved being surrounded by his family and looked forward to having family and friends in his home. He enjoyed good food, sitting in the sun, and visiting with friends and family. He loved playing cards, cribbage, canasta, and gin rummy, and looked forward to his next competitor. During his last year of life, he was happy to escape the long Island Pond winter and become a “snow bird” in Florida. He loved the Florida winter weather and spent many of his days in leisure on his porch, visiting with his friends and neighbors. Despite his progressively worsening health, he looked forward to trips to the ocean and riding his golf cart around his new neighborhood. He will be remembered for his wit and humor, for always being in for a good laugh, and enjoying the simple pleasures of life.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Coppola Testut; his brother Gilbert Testut and his partner, Joan Lozier, of Branford, Connecticut; his step-children: Kenneth Carlisle of Alexandria, Virginia, Michael Carlisle and his wife, Peggy, of Danville, Suzanne Carlisle Stebenne and her husband, Donald, of Hartland, Patrick Carlisle of Quechee, and Peter Carlisle and his wife, Lisa, of North Attleboro, Massachusetts; his children: Lorraine Savoy and her husband, Ron, of Ridgecrest, California, Michael Testut and his wife, Lois, of Island Pond, Connie Walker of Underhill, Gayle Reynolds and her husband, Dennis, of Virginia, and Lori Testut of Lyndonville; his nephews: Jeff Testut and his wife, Tammy of Branford, Gary Testut and his wife, Sandi, of Gainesville, Virginia, and Brian Testut and his wife, Socorro, of Norwich, Connecticut; and by many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; a daughter, Doreen Testut; a son, Larry Testut; his sister-in-law Monica Testut; and by his son-in-law Robert Walker.
A Catholic graveside ceremony and interment will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Island Pond at a later date.
