Russell F. Cota

Russell F. Cota, 90, of Barton died on April 26, 2012, in Newport.
He was born on April 22, 1922, in Lisbon, New Hampshire, a son of John and Mary V. (Bernatchy) Cota. On November 2, 1946, he married Doris Buskey who predeceased him on May 1, 1991.
Mr. Cota served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He worked in the U.S. Postal Service for 34 years and retired in 1981 as a postmaster in Barton.
Among his hobbies, he loved gardening, golfing, reading, and fishing. He was an avid Yankees fan and a former member of the Orleans Country Club and the American Legion Orleans Post #23.
On his eightieth birthday, he bought a Mustang convertible, which he enjoyed for the past ten years.
He is survived by his three children: John and his wife, Audrey, of Jeffersonville, Jeanne and her husband, Wayne, of South Burlington, and Jeff and his wife, Jean, of Barton; by his daughter-in-law Linda Cota of Barton; by five grandchildren: Tim, Tisha, Shelly, Ryan, and Corrina; by four step-grandchildren: Thomas, Kaity, Kyle, and Kolby; by nine great-grandchildren; and by a sister, Eva Stewart, of Fort Ann, New York. He was predeceased by his wife Doris; by a son, James, on March 24, 2009; by four brothers: George, Rupert, Arthur, and Richard; and by three sisters: Rita, Eleanor, and Mary Louise.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 4, 2012, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Barton with the Reverend Timothy Naples celebrating a Mass of Christian burial. Interment will follow at the Welcome O. Brown Cemetery in Barton.

Roland W. Gonyaw
Roland W. Gonyaw, 87, of Morgan died on April 25, 2012, in Newport.
He was born on July 12, 1924, in Albany, a son of Mitchell and Sadie (Noyes) Gonyaw. On June 13, 1948, he married Alice Bly who predeceased him on March 18, 2009.
Mr. Gonyaw entered the United States Marines and served his country during World War II. During his lifetime he was a truck driver for Holdman Trucking. He was a lister for he town of Morgan for 26 years and he was a member of American Legion Post #21 of Newport.
He is survived by his children: Terwin Gonyaw and his wife, Janice, of Gainsville, Virginia, Kenric (Ric) Gonyaw and his wife, Avalena (Chic), of Morgan, and Daniel Gonyaw and his wife, Wendy, of Morgan; by the following grandchildren: Jason Gonyaw Sr. and his wife, Bobbie, of Morgan, Michael Gonyaw and his wife, Tallie, of Gig Harbor, Washington, Michelle Calabro and her husband, John, of Centerville, Virginia, Jessica Koller and her husband, Jeremy, of Centerville, Virginia; by seven great-grandchildren; by his brother Mahlon Gonyaw and his wife, Madeline, of St. Johnsbury; by his sister Mildred Major of Burlington; and by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on April 30 in Newport. Interment followed in Clark Cemetery in Morgan with full military honors.

Albert W. Herzog
Albert W. Herzog, 82, of Sutton died on Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury.
He was born on February 20, 1930, in New Britain, Connecticut, the son of John and Laura (Kuhl) Herzog.
Mr. Herzog worked for many years as a land surveyor in Connecticut. He had visited the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont for many years and in 2008 he moved here permanently.
He was a member of the Austrian Donue Club and the Alpen Lant Tazers (a German dance group) of New Britain. He was a member of American Legion Post #58 of Lyndon, the New Britain Fish and Game Club and the Loyal Order of the Moose Club in St. Johnsbury. He enjoyed music, hiking, fishing and the out of doors. He also made many friends in West Burke and Island Pond while attending the senior meal sites there.
Survivors include his companion of 37 years, Joan Wood of Sutton and Newark; a niece, Nancy Napert, and her husband, Ronald, of Connecticut, and their family; and his deceased nephew’s family. He was predeceased by one brother, two sisters and his nephew.
Services are being planned for a later date.

Thomas R. Long Sr.

Thomas R. Long Sr., 81, of Westport, Connecticut for the past 50 years, died suddenly on Thursday, April 19, 2012, in Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, Connecticut, from heart failure.
Son of Roy and Charlena (Clough) Long, he was born in Albany on December 22, 1930. He grew up in Albany on the family farm. Educated in a one-room schoolhouse with no running water or electricity, he completed grades first through eighth in seven years and graduated from Orleans High School with honors. He served one year in the U.S. Navy.
He was married for life to Elaine Miles in 1949, recently celebrating their sixty-second anniversary.
Mr. Long was a retired senior vice-president and general counsel of Westvaco Corporation, having been associated with Westvaco since 1962 when he joined the staff of the tax section of the comptroller’s department. He was appointed corporate tax manager in 1964 and elected assistant comptroller in 1969. He joined the law department as associate general counsel in 1973 when he was also elected an assistant secretary of the company. He became general counsel in November of 1977 and was elected as a vice-president in July of 1980. In April of 1986 he was elected senior vice-president of Westvaco.
Mr. Long graduated from the University of Vermont in 1953 and from Yale University Law School in 1956. He held a CPA certificate in Illinois. Mr. Long worked for The Northern Trust and Pullman Standard Companies in Chicago, Illinois, after graduating from Yale, before joining Westvaco. He was admitted to the practice of law in Illinois and New York as well as various federal courts, and after retirement to the Connecticut Bar. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and the American Law Institute. Mr. Long also served on the Board of Arbitration in New York and Connecticut, and served as an arbitrator for many years.
He was a voracious reader, amateur photographer, boater, woodworker, antique collector, as well as a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Long travelled through all 50 states and all continents, except Antarctica (which he was planning to travel to this year), and countless countries with his wife. Often through the camera lens, with his hands on tools, or just listening, Mr. Long found beauty in nature, landscapes, music, gardens, flowers, sunsets, and above all, his family.
He is survived by Elaine; by his sons: Edward, Thomas Jr., and Dana Long; by his daughters-in-law: Andree, Melinda, and Jacqueline; and by his granddaughters: Samantha, Emma, and Amanda Long, and Elizabeth Thompson.
A funeral service was held on May 1, in Westport. Interment will be private.

Kenneth Allen Mason

Kenneth Allen Mason, 69, of Morgan died on April 24, 2012, in Newport, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on February 16, 1943, in Irasburg, son of Ernest Charles Mason and Marion Clarkson Mason.
He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Ellen Hommel, who survives him, on September 14, 1963.
Mr. Mason graduated from Orleans High School in the Class of 1960 and entered the United States Air Force (USAF) directly following graduation. A1C Mason was honorably discharged from the USAF at Pope Air Force Base in North Carolina on June 14, 1966.
During his service in the USAF, A1C Mason received several commendations for achievements in management, data systems and statistics, and supervisory skills. He took these skills and applied them to his 40-plus years within the manufacturing arm of the home furnishing industry, including 28-plus years with Ethan Allen, Inc.
Mr. Mason had a knack for plant management and manufacturing logistics, incorporating client and personnel relationships with overall production efficiency and issue resolution. He worked with several manufacturing facilities in several states, including Ethan Allen, DCI, Athens Furniture Industries, Baker Furniture, Green Mountain Custom Finishing, Vermont Tubbs, Vermont Precision, and, Lyndon Furniture. He retained relationships and close friendships throughout the industry until the time of his passing.
Mr. Mason enjoyed serving his community through many volunteer services. He had a passion for supporting youth sports and activities and assisted many years with local youth baseball and basketball teams starting back in the late 1960s with the Pony League in Orleans. He coached Little League and Babe Ruth in Orleans County and assisted with the Border Hoops Junior Pro All-Star Basketball program. Mr. Mason was an active Cub Scout Leader and Elks member for several years. He was a mentor and community activities leader for the Orleans County Court Diversion program, Green-Up Day, North Country Hospital Wellness Smokers’ Anonymous program, North Country Union High School booster program, Morgan’s E. Taylor Hatton Elementary School advisory task force, and numerous other avocations.
In his retirement years, he enjoyed renovating the old cow barn to accommodate his Belgian draft horses on the farmland in Morgan that he and his wife purchased in 2000, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Another proud accomplishment on the property was working closely to reclaim the existing pond, known now as “Ken Spring Pond,” and stocking it with brook trout, which he always loved to fish for throughout the county.
Mr. Mason loved visiting with family and friends and was always game for a trip to Virginia to see his grandkids play sports. He enjoyed playing cribbage with whoever would take him up on the challenge and then entertain with his renditions on the karaoke machine. He hosted many snowshoeing and cross-country ski parties with friends out in Morgan and left no season behind in planned fun activities.
He is survived by his wife Barbara E. Mason of Morgan; and by his children: Kristin Mason and her partner, Ron Roberge, of Morgan, and Korey Mason and his wife, Amy, of Williamsburg, Virginia. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Lindsay Mason and Ryan Mason of Williamsburg; by his mother-in-law Ellen Stone Hommel of Orleans; by his brother-in-law Richard Hommel and his wife, Alida, of Whitinsville, Massachusetts; by his nephew Rick Hommel and his wife, Lisa, and their children: RJ, Samantha and Eli, of Waterbury; by his niece Tracy Ferreira and her husband, David, and their children: Carly and Jake of Milford, Massachusetts; by his special cousin Martha Jean Burton and her husband, Steve, of Lebanon, New Hampshire; and by many extended family members in Vermont, New Hampshire, Texas, Washington, Alabama and Virginia. He was predeceased by his daughter Kimberly Ellen Mason; by his parents Ernest Charles Mason and Marion Clarkson Mason; and by his brother Roy Mason.
In lieu of funeral services, internment and graveside services will be held at Pleasant View Cemetery in Orleans on Saturday, May 26, at 11 a.m. Following the internment, a celebration of his life will be held at Ken Spring Pond in Morgan on May 26, at 3 p.m.

Judith Rivard Moyer
Judith “Judy” Rivard Moyer, 72, of Newark, Delaware, died on Tuesday, April 3, 2012.
She was born in Newport on September 26, 1939, daughter of the late Louis and Shirley Rivard.
At age 25 she moved to Delaware and in 1970 moved to Newark where she worked at the Deer Park Tavern for 30 years. From 2001 until the present, she was employed at Veterans of Foreign War Post #475 where she was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed spending Saturday mornings going to yard sales. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Gram.”
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Richard W. Moyer, and her brother, Louis Rivard Jr. She is survived by her longtime friend and companion Robert Wesselman; by her brothers: Robert Rivard and his wife, Mary, and Richard Rivard and his wife, Sherry; by her sister Rosalie Rushlow and her husband, Edward, of Vermont; by her five children: Kenneth Davis and his wife, Gina, and Timothy Davis, all of Vermont, Scott Davis and his wife, Suzanne, Randall Franklin, and Geoffrey Franklin and his wife, Jessica, all of Delaware; by her grandchildren: Amanda of New Hampshire, Krystal and Celine of Vermont, and Kristina, Kayla, Ethan, Andrew, and Nathan of Delaware; by her five great-grandchildren; and by many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
A memorial service and celebration of her life were held on April 13 in Newark, Delaware. She was laid to rest at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery and part of her ashes were put into Lake Memphremagog in Newport.
Horace A. Pariseau
Horace A. Pariseau, 95, of Newport died on April 23, 2012, in Newport.
He was born on August 24, 1916, in Paquetteville, Quebec, a son of Emery and Rose (Dumoulin) Pariseau. On July 1, 1944, he married Pauline Grondin who predeceased him on March 17, 1999.
Mr. Pariseau was a mill worker, farmer and truck driver during his lifetime. He was a member of St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church of Newport and the Gibbons Council Knights of Columbus #2285. His hobbies included playing cards, pool and bowling.
He is survived by his children: Joseph Alan Pariseau of Breeze, Illinois, John Pariseau of Dalton, Massachusetts, Joseph Richard Pariseau of New Brunswick, Canada, and Joanne Lise Pariseau of Newport; by his five grandchildren; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers: Gerard, Armand, Hector and Lucien; and by two sisters: Blanche and Alice.
Funeral services were held on May 2 in Newport. Interment followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Newport.

Bonnie Jean (Aiken) Sargent
Bonnie Jean (Aiken) Sargent, 56, died suddenly on April 19, 2012, in Newport.
She was born on November 20, 1955, in Newport, a daughter of Donald and Mary (Hoose) Aiken.
She graduated from North Country Union High School and was a longtime employee of RJ’s Friendly Market. She was a cherished mother and wife. She devoted her entire life to the happiness of her family.
She loved reading, bingo, playing cards and cuddling with her cat, Sweet Pea. She lived life to the fullest and will be missed dearly.
She is survived by her husband Norman Sargent Jr. of Derby Line; by her son Jason and his wife, Lisa, of Newport Center; by her son Josh and his girlfriend, Heather Baraw, of Jay; by her mother Mary Aiken of Newport; by her brother Roger Aiken of Derby; by her sister Joyce Jenness and her husband, Don, of Newport; by her sister Rosalie Aiken of Newport; by her half-sister Shirley Rose of St. Albans; and by several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws and friends. She was predeceased by her father Donald Aiken; by her daughter Jennifer Sargent; by her brother Rocky Aiken; by twin brothers Ray and Roy Aiken; and by a sister, Linda Aiken.
A private ceremony will be held at the convenience of the family.
Richard E. Slicer
Richard E. Slicer, 75, of St. Johnsbury died on Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, following a brief illness, surrounded by family.
He was born in Craftsbury on May 10, 1936, the son of Foster and Gwendolyn (Cubit) Slicer.
He was a 1954 graduate of Craftsbury Academy. On November 9, 1956, he married Leah Goodwin in Craftsbury. They made their home in St. Johnsbury Center where Mr. Slicer worked out of the Vermont State Highway Department district garage. He retired after 43 years of service as the garage foreman.
In 1989, he moved his family to a new home he and his family had built for them on Mooney Road in St. Johnsbury.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed plants, vegetable and flower gardens, planting trees as well as feeding the birds.
He was a member of the Meridian Sun Lodge Free and Accepted Masons in Craftsbury.
He leaves his loving wife Leah of St. Johnsbury; three daughters: Bonnie Raboin and her husband, Donald, of St. Johnsbury Center, Joni Gingue and her husband, Michel, of Barnet, and Debbie Gingue and her husband, Norman, of Waterford; six grandchildren: Marcel Raboin and his wife Jacinta, Dan Raboin and his wife, Sherylin, Keith Gingue and his wife, Danielle, Ashley Gingue and Alan Legacy, Eric Gingue and her friend, Kristen Weaver, and Scott Gingue; two great-grandchildren: Karalyn and Makaelyn Raboin; three brothers: Ronald Slicer and his wife, Donna, of Jefferson, Maine, Robert Slicer of Franklin, North Carolina, and David Slicer and his wife, Rita, of Headland, Alabama; a brother-in-law, Neil Goodwin and his friend Jeannie Farrar, of St. Johnsbury; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family.
A celebration of his life was held at the family home in St. Johnsbury on April 29. The final committal at the Branch Cemetery in Craftsbury will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Penelope J. Tice, 66, of Holland died on April 25, 2012, in Newport.
She was born on May 23, 1945, in Newport, a daughter of Warren and Patricia (Cushing) Rumery. On April 6, 1963, she married Earl Tice who survives her.
Mrs. Tice graduated from the Derby Academy in 1963. She was the former president of the Holland Historical Society, commissioner of the Mead Hill Cemetery, and was a member of the Holland United Methodist Church. Among her hobbies, she loved genealogy.
She is survived by her husband Earl Tice of Holland; by her two children: Catherine Emery of Holland and Allen Tice and his wife, Samantha, of Holland; by three grandchildren: Jesse Miskimin of Newport Center, Donald Emery Jr. of Holland, and Dannica Limlaw of Holland; by a great-grandchild, Robert Palmer, of Albany; and by two sisters: Melody Ricard and her husband, Andy, of Derby Line and Barbara Labonte and her husband, Albert, of Newport Center.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.
