Marie J. Cyr
Marie J. Cyr, 84, of Newport died peacefully surrounded by her family on May 5, 2010, in Newport.
She was born May 7, 1925, in St. Magloeil, Quebec, a daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Chaput) Gosselin.
She married Ludger R. Cyr, who predeceased her in 1977.
She is survived by her children: Pierre Cyr and his wife, Louise, of Derby, Henri and Albert Cyr both of Newport, Pauline Laplume and her husband, Paul, of Newport Center, Louise Provoncha of North Troy, Lillian Bowen and her friend Willey Bowen of Derby, and Rose Lyon and her husband, Robert, of Brownington; by the following grandchildren: Alan Laplume and his wife, Rachel, Diane Laplume, Kelly Provoncha, Shawn Provoncha, Daniel J.K. Cyr, Katrina Lafoe, Ryan Cyr and his wife, Alyssa, Michael Cyr and his wife, Heather, Matthew Cyr, Brandy Robillard and her husband, Zachary, Christina Rowlins, Henri Cyr Jr., and Ashley Cyr; by the following great-grandchildren: Alan Laplume Jr., Zachary Laplume, Tyrell Morse, Austin Lynne Jones, Ethan Robillard and Nicholas Robillard. She is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Real Gosselin of Montreal, Quebec, Eugene Gosselin of St. Camille, Quebec, Lucette Couture of Ontario, Therese Prevost of Quebec City, Quebec, Rita Dubois of Quebec City, Fernend Gosselin of Quebec City, Gaetane LaBrecque of St. Camille, and Carmel Nadeau of New Haven, Connecticut. She was predeceased by a son-in-law, Wayne Provoncha, and by a sister, Collette Gosselin, and by two brothers, Phillip and Joseph Gosselin.
Mrs. Cyr was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church of North Troy and a past member of the Ladies of St. Anne. She enjoyed and loved her family first and foremost. She did all the usual cooking, sewing, mending, and made sure that they all attended church on Sunday. She and her husband made many trips to see her family members in Canada. She also was a wonderful caregiver, and she always had dogs and cats around her but she especially enjoyed her cats.
Funeral services were held on May 10 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in North Troy with the Reverend Henry Mlinganisa celebrating a Mass. Interment followed in Notre Dame Cemetery.

Phyllis L. Glasson
Phyllis L. Glasson, 88, of Island Pond died in Barton on January 9, 2010.
She was the widow of Russell Glasson, who she married in 1941.
Mrs. Glasson was born in Island Pond on September 22, 1921, a daughter of Edward and Ida (Legacy) Hawkins.
She was a teacher for 28 years and taught in Brighton elementary as well as Morgan and Holland schools. She was principal of Brighton elementary for a few years. She was secretary to the Brighton Alumni Association for about 30 years, and she held all elected posts of the Order of the Eastern Star and was also in the state and grand representatives of North Dakota.
She enjoyed traveling with her husband and went camping with her daughter Barb and her husband, Howard, including traveling to the West Coast. She also enjoyed flower gardening, birding, sugaring, going to her camp, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma/Episolon Chapter, a lifetime member of the North Star Chapter of the Eastern Star, and the Island Pond Historical Society. Mrs. Glasson was also a member of the Island Pond Congregational Church for many years and was very active on the church board as a trustee and deacon. She was superintendent of Sunday School, as well as a teacher there, and she served as secretary of the church.
She is survived by her daughters: Barbara Walker and her husband, Howard of Island Pond, and Lola Carpenter and her husband, Gary, of Spencer, Tennessee; by her grandchildren: Wendy Walker and her husband, Charles Fleer Jr., of Olympia, Washington, and Justin Walker and his wife, Lisa, of North Pole, Alaska; her granddaughters: Kelly Dodson and her friend Mickey Fisher of Spencer, Tennessee, and Kate Carpenter of Friendsville, Tennessee; by great-grandchildren Ethan and Emma Dodson and Brianna Walker; by her sister Irene and her husband, Darrell Annis, of Island Pond; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Russell, on July 18, 1990; by an infant son, Roy Edward, on March 17, 1961: and by siblings Percy Hawkins, Pauline McKinney, and Junior Edward Hawkins.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 14, at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home at 1199 Railroad Street in Island Pond. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 15, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Island Pond with the Reverend Alan Magoon officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeside Cemetery where services by members of Eastern Star will be held.

Earlah E. “Ruth” Ingalls
Earlah E. “Ruth” Ingalls, of Irasburg died peacefully at home on May 5, 2010.
She was born August 14, 1927, in Albany, a daughter of Jesse Farr and Hazel (Davis) Farr.
She leaves behind her loving husband of 66 years, Maurice T. Ingalls of Irasburg; her son Bill and his wife, Toni, of Irasburg; grandsons: Jesse Ingalls and his wife, Sally, Russell Ingalls, Keith Ingalls and his wife, Mimi, and Kevin Ingalls; her great-grandson Jonathan; and her sister Odessa Sanville of Irasburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by daughters Marilyn, Susan, Paula, and Deborah, as well as a brother, Kenneth Farr, and by two sisters, Mary Potter and Madeline Kennison.
Mrs. Ingalls was born and raised on the family farm in Albany and attended Craftsbury Academy. In her youth, she was a skilled horse rider, and was often seen riding her horse over hill and dale to school in Albany Center.
On February 1, 1944, she married Maurice who was serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. She worked various jobs while keeping her home. She was a frequent participant in most of the area bingo games and won her share of the jackpots.
Mrs. Ingall’s true love in life was her family. She lived for her husband, son and grandsons. Gram could always be counted on to impart gentle advice and encouragement to those she thought needed it, and no holiday get-together was complete without gram’s rolls. She bravely suffered grave tragedy in her life with the loss of her four daughters. Throughout all heartache, she showed a strength most would feel impossible to comprehend. She always knew she would see the girls again, and now she has. She leaves behind a shining example of how one should live, and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on May 9 at the Irasburg United Church with the Reverend Harvey Bartlett officiating. Interment followed in Albany Village Cemetery.

Michael G. Martel
Michael G. Martel, 47, of Colchester died unexpectedly this spring.
He was born November 14, 1962, in New Britain, Connecticut, the beloved son of Jerry Martel and the late Pauline Lesage.
He graduated from Lake Region Union High School in 1980 and later from Eastern Michigan University.
Mr. Martel was a gifted artist and photographer. He loved skiing and the outdoors.
He is survived by his father, Gerard Martel, and his wife, Judy, of Orleans; two children: Christian Martel of Falmouth, Massachusetts, and Mason Martel of Westford; two brothers, Robert Martel of Barton and Edward Tinker of Sydney, Australia; three sisters: Lee-Anne Martin and her husband, Tom, of Moretown, Tracie Yindra and her husband, Chris, of Huntington, and Cindy Steele of Phoenix, Arizona; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Pauline, and by a brother, Paul.
Funeral services were held at St. Theresa’s Church in Orleans on May 8 with the Reverend Sixmund Nyabenda celebrating a Mass.

George Chalmers McKelvey Jr.
George Chalmers McKelvey Jr., 85, of North Haverhill, New Hampshire, died on May 8, 2010, at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, New Hampshire.
He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, on July 28, 1924, a son of George Chalmers and Doris (Hird) McKelvey.
He graduated from Lowell High School in 1942. While there, he was a member of the band and played at the World’s Fair in New York in 1939. He attended the University of New Hampshire (UNH) and played solo trumpet with the UNH band. In his sophomore year, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he remained from 1943-1946. After attending his basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama, he was assigned to the Anti-Tank Company of the 326 Glider Infantry Regiment of the 13th Airborne Division in the European Theater. Later he marched down Fifth Avenue in New York City in the famous victory parade with the 82nd Airborne. He completed his service at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Upon his return to civilian life, he went back to UNH where he received a bachelor’s degree in history in 1949 and a master’s degree in history in 1950.
From 1950-1952, Mr. McKelvey served as principal of the North Hampton Elementary School. From 1952-1953, he taught at the Woodsville Elementary School in Woodsville. The following year, he became the teaching principal there until 1969. When the Woodsville and Haverhill school districts combined, he was appointed full-time principal of the then K-8 schools, Woodsville elementary and the James R. Morrill School in North Haverhill. He remained at the two schools until retiring in 1980.
He enjoyed listening to and collecting big band music. Traveling, golf, reading, and sports (especially the Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots, and Bruins) were his passions, and his family meant the world to him.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary (Downs) McKelvey; their son George C. McKelvey III and his wife, Judy, of Newport; granddaughter Meredith of Boston, Masachusetts; his sister-in-law Eleanor Riordan of Dover, New Hampshire; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by four generations of the Kimball and Morrill families who have been best friends and neighbors for 54 years.
A funeral service was held on May 12 with Gerry Brooks officiating. Burial followed at Horsemeadow Cemetery.

Bertha Nora O’Gorman
Bertha Nora O’Gorman died on May 4, 2010, in Newport.
She was born on January 3, 1921, in St. Giles, Quebec, a daughter of Nicholas O’Gorman and Rose Bagley. Her family moved to Island Pond in 1927 where Ms. O’Gorman attended St. Mary’s Academy, graduating in 1938.
Ms. O’Gorman worked 27 years for the A&P Company, first in its Island Pond store, then in Montpelier, Barre and Gorham, New Hampshire. She completed her career as a bookkeeper at the Mountain View House in Whitefield, New Hampshire.
She was an active participant in numerous community organizations, among them the Brighton American Legion Auxiliary, Random Ladies Club, Catholic Daughters of America, and St. Mary’s Alumni. She was renowned for helping others in any way she could. Within her extended family, she was everyone’s “godmother.”
Ms. O’Gorman was predeceased by her parents and 11 siblings. She leaves her sisters-in-law: Muriel O’Gorman and Dorothy O’Gorman; and several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, and great-great-nieces and -nephews.
Her funeral Mass was celebrated at St. James the Greater in Island Pond on May 8 with burial at Lakeside Cemetery.

Evelyn M. Petelle
Evelyn M. Petelle, 87, of Derby Line died in Newport on May 8, 2010.
She was born on November 11, 1922, a daughter of Henry and Octavia (Brooks) Valley.
On April 28, 1946, she married Raymond Petelle, who predeceased her.
Mrs. Petelle worked as a secretary for many years at Butterfields and the former Edwin Earle Insurance Agency. She was an active member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church and the Ladies Alter Society. She was also an RSVP volunteer and helped out for several years in Joan Sbara’s third-grade class in that capacity. She also enjoyed making arts and crafts and taking trips with her late husband.
Mrs. Petelle is survived by her son Russell Petelle and his wife, Anne Marie, of Derby Line; and by the following grandchildren: Heidi Santaw and her husband, Shawn, Raymond Beauchesne and his wife, Vicki, Rebecca Petelle and her companion, Kevin Purcell, Regan Vaine and her husband, Jerry, Skyler Boushel, Paul and Hannah Chambers; and by the following great-grandchildren: Abigail and T.J. Santaw, Joshua, Ryan, Alex, and Landon Beauchesne, Maddie and Daven Vaine. She was predeceased by a son, Darrell Petelle, and by a daughter, Phyllis Beauchesne.
Funeral services were held on May 11 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Derby Line where a Mass was celebrated. Interment followed in St. Edward’s Cemetery.

Raymond John Major
Raymond John Major, 79, died peacefully at his home in Newport on Saturday, May 1, 2010.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Grenier Major; his son, Daniel Major; his daughters, Rachel Carr and her husband, Michael, of Bellingham, Washington, Loraine Bullis and her husband, David, of Barre, and Cynthia Gardyne and her husband, Scot, of Newport; by six grandsons: Casey and Kyle Major, Douglas and Jeffrey Carr, and Shawn and Scott Bullis; three brothers: Andrew Major, Paul Major, and John Major. He was predeacesed by two brothers, Gilbert Major and Marcel Major; and one sister, Jeanine Gratton.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dr. Ron Holland Dialysis Center at North Country Hospital in Newport.
There will be no calling hours or public service. Private interment will be held by the family at a later date.
