Rosemary Bessent

 

Rosemary I. Bessent, 56, of Derby died on May 31, 2010, in Newport.
She was born February 16, 1954, in Lebanon, New Hampshire, a daughter of Lawrence Fogg and the late Patricia Facteau.
She was an active member of the Derby United Church.  She enjoyed quilting, and craft work.
She is survived by a son, Jason Bessent, and by a granddaughter, Ember Bessent, both  of  Windsor; by her father, Lawrence Fogg, of Derby; by the following brothers and sisters:  Vernon Fogg and his wife, Kim, Stanley Fogg, Matthew Fogg and his wife, Karen, all of West Hartford, Pamela Stanley and her husband, William, of West Virginia, Marjorie Brown and her husband, David, of Maryland, Josephine Fogg and Elizabeth Fogg of Morrisville; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She was predeceased by three sisters:  Valarie Fogg, Sandra Fogg, and Christine Punt.
Funeral services were held on June 4 at the Derby United Church with the Reverend Fred Barker officiating.

John Henry “Running Deer” Brin

John Henry “Running Deer” Brin died on April 28, 2010, after losing his battle with cancer.  He died peacefully at North Country Hospital in Newport, surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Mr. Brin was born in Nova Scotia, a son of Helen (Fitzgerald) and Emil Brin, on March 30, 1924.  He was proud of his Canadian citizenship as well as his American citizenship.
He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Evelyn Carrara Brown, of Albany and Raynham, Massachusetts; his daughter Geraldine (Bruce) Keane, of Connecticut; two step-daughters,  Elaine Dun and Laurie Brown of Massachusetts; a brother, Steven, of Rhode Island; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews, both in Canada and the U.S.
He was predeceased by his parents; two sisters, Lillian and Margaret; and his son Charles.
Mr. Brin spent most of his working life in the Attleboro, Massachusetts, area, in the chemical plating industry, rising to the level of plant manager with the Balfour Company.  He also took pride in the fact that he was a Boy Scout leader for over 50 years.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army and fought during World War II.  He rose to the rank of sergeant.  He was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries received in battle on Peleiu Island on November 6, 1944.  He was a radio operator with Company L, 321st Infantry Regiment.  He was also a member of the Orleans American Legion Post #23.
He was proud of his native heritage, and was know as Running Deer.  He was a chief of the Abenaki tribe, and also served as an elder and medicine person with the Wollomonuppoag Indian Council of Plainville, Massachusetts; Dighton Council Oak, of Dighton, Massachusetts; and was one of the three founders of the Algonquin Medicine Society of Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Vermont.
Running Deer was laid to rest in native tradition at his family’s private cemetery.  He will be greatly missed by family, friends, and students the world over.

Geraldine Faye Farnsworth

 

Geraldine Faye (Friend) Farnsworth,84, died May 29, 2010, at the Union House Nursing Home in Glover.
Mrs. Farnsworth was born in Barton on November 3, 1925, a daughter of Laura and George Friend.
She married Luther Farnsworth.
She worked at the bobbin mill in South Barton, then worked at the Barton dry cleaners.
She is survived by Donald Farnsworth, her son, and Geraldine Carriere;  by daughters Joanne Searles and Martha Farnsworth; by six grandchildren:  Katina, Chasity, Tracy, Jamie, Kevin, and William; by six great-grandchildren; a sister, Leslie Geware; and by nieces and nephews and extended family at the Union House.
She was predeceased by Luther Farnsworth, her son Thomas Farnsworth, and by several sisters and brothers.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, June 12, at 2 p.m. at the South Barton Cemetery.

 

 

Glendon I. Greenwood

Glendon I. Greenwood, 85, of Derby died suddenly on June 2, 2010, at his home.
He was born June 16, 1924, in Derby Line, a son of John and Lenora (Powers) Greenwood.
On October 23, 1944, he married Phyllis Morse, who survives him.
Mr. Greenwood entered the U.S. Army and served his country during World War II.
He was a roller man for the Pike Construction Company in Newport, and he also owned a used car dealership.
He held memberships with the American Legion Post #21, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post  #798, and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and tinkering on cars.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Greenwood;  two children:  Sharyn Blake of Derby and Glenn Greenwood and his wife, Debbie, of Bradenton, Florida; by the following grandchildren:  Randy Blake, Derrick Blake and his wife, Ann Marie, Bradley Blake and his wife, Susie, all of Derby, Shelley Lafoe and her husband, Charlie, Allison Hildreth and her husband, Cory, and Brooke Robbins and her husband, Danny, all of Bradenton; by his great-grandchildren:  Travis, Nicholas, Amanda, Shelby, Brittany, and Brady Blake, Caroline, Dax LaFoe, Judson, Elle Hildreth, Aubrey, and Karsyn Robbins; and by two great-great- grandchildren:  Ryder and Kolten; by a sister, Euleta Guertin, of St. Petersburg, Florida; sisters-in-law Hattie Greenwood of New Hampshire, and Isabelle Lavoie of Derby; and by numerous nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by a sister, Gwen Poitras, and by three brothers:   Francis, Raymond, and Talcott.

Evelyn Abbie Allyn McDonald

 

Evelyn Abbie (Allyn) McDonald, 91, of South Burlington died on Sunday, May 30, 2010, at the St. Albans Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born in East Charleston on January 8, 1919, the youngest child of Abner Edwin Allyn and Annie McLaughlin Allyn.  She was a descendant of Charleston’s first white settler, Abner Allyn.
She attended elementary school at Buck School in Charleston, a one-room schoolhouse, and Brighton High School in Island Pond, graduating in 1935 at age 16.  She attended the University of Vermont in Burlington and graduated in 1939 with a bachelor of arts degree in education.
Her first teaching job was in the Barre Town School District at Lower Graniteville.  She was a teaching principal at that school,  teaching grades six through eight.  Students from her first teaching position stayed in contact with her for her entire life.
She then taught in the Newport City south and west buildings, continuing to serve as a teaching principal.
On July 11, 1942, she married Donald Wilson McDonald at South Congregational Church in St. Johnsbury and settled in Island Pond where Mr. McDonald was a conductor for the Grand Trunk Railroad (later renamed the Canadian National Railroad) for 38 years.  She was a long-time resident of Island Pond until retiring to Burlington in 1994.
She returned to teaching at Brighton Elementary School, and concluded her teaching career at North Country Union Junior High School, retiring in 1977.
Mrs. McDonald was an active member of community organizations, including the Island Pond Congregational Church and the First Congregational Church of Burlington.  She also served five years on the school board in Island Pond.
She was predeceased by her parents and husband, as well as her sisters, Anna Jardus, Glenn Patterson, and Doris Chamberlain; and a brother, Ernest Allyn.  Survivors include a daughter, Marcia Ethier of North Reading, Masachusetts; a son, Allyn McDonald, of Swanton; and two grandsons, Justin Ethier of Baltimore, Maryland, and Jason Ethier of Acton, Massachusetts.
A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Burlington on Saturday, June 12, at 11 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. McDonald’s memory may be made to the First Congregational Church of Burlington, 38 South Winooski Avenue, Burlington, Vermont 05401.

Frances L. Newton

Frances L. Newton, 73, of Orleans died on June 2, 2010, at her home in Orleans.
She was born December 8, 1936, in Boston, Massachusetts, a daughter of Frank and Florence (Hulse) Gately.
On October 3, 1964, she married Lynn Newton who survives her.
Mrs. Newton was an administrator-operator for North Country Hospital for 26 years.  She also worked for a time at Ethan Allen and the Orleans County Memorial Hospital.  She was also a past member of the Orleans Ambulance Service.
She enjoyed bingo, bowling, making crafts, and she was a member and secretary of the Orleans Senior Center and a member of the Newport VFW Ladies Auxillary.
She is survived by her husband, Lynn, of Orleans; three children:  John E. Ames Jr. and his wife, Julie, of Florida, Janet L. White and her husband, Wayne, of North Carolina, and William “Bill” Newton and his wife, Sandi, of Florida; her grandchildren:  Kristine Revis and her husband, John, Jaime Freeman of North Carolina, and Zachary Newton of Florida; by her great-grandchildren:  Gaby, Shavanna, Katelyn, Andrew, Tri, Alycia, Taylor, Dustin and Brianna; two brothers:  Eugene Alexander and his wife, Barbara, of Massachusetts and Robert Hulse and his wife, Beverly, of Texas; a sister, Leona Harding, and her husband, John; and by several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by a brother, Frank Hulse; a sister, Muriel Ernst; grandson Michael White; and great-grandsons Tyler Dutton and Brandon Freeman.
Funeral services were held on June 7 at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home with the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating. Interment followed in Pleasantview Cemetery in Orleans.

Frances M. Philips

 

Frances M. Philips, 91, of Barton, formerly of St. Johnsbury, died on May 21, 2010, in Barton.
She was born January 6, 1919, in Baltimore, Maryland, a daughter of Devane and Ada (Flannigan) Sibly.
Mrs. Philips was a customer service representative for Verizon for 30 years.
She enjoyed reading, cross-country skiing, and had a love for Christmas.  She kept her Christmas tree up the whole year, and she loved every snowflake.  She was especially proud of her Scottish heritage.  She was a very patriotic woman, a conservative Republican, and a gun advocate.
She is survived by her son David Philips and his wife, Alice, of Baltimore, Maryland; by two grandchildren:  Scott Philips and his wife, Charlotte, and Carrie Ann Rusconi and her husband, Matthew; and by Cindy and Gordon Chaffee, who cared for her the last five years of her life.  She was predeceased by her son Charles Philips.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 10,  at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Memorial Chapel at 37 Lake Road in Newport, with the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating.  Friends may call at the funeral home on June 10, from noon until the hour of the funeral.
Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery in East Charleston.

Roger C. Simoneau

Roger C. Simoneau, 65, a well known businessman in Newport, died June 2, 2010, in Newport surrounded by his loving family.
He was born December 22, 1944, in Waterbury, Connecticut, a son of Joseph and Medora (Racine) Simoneau.
He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1962.  He entered the U.S. Army on July 3, 1962, and was honorably discharged on July 2, 1965.
He owned and operated Border Appraisals where he was a commercial real estate appraiser.  He was a member of the Benevolent Order of the Elks Lodge # 2155 and the National Association of Real Estate Appraisers.
He enjoyed square dancing and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by two children:  Ronda Fletcher and her husband, Danny, of Derby Line, and Brian Simoneau and his wife, Brook, of Charleston; by his grandchildren:  Allison Fletcher and Andrew Halpern, and Cody and Dylan Simoneau; by his friend and the mother of his children, Linda Bliss, of Newport; and by his caregiver, April Mead, of Charleston.  He was predeceased by a brother, Edward Simoneau, in 1971.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 9, at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home at 4670 Darling Hill Road in Newport with Pastor Paul Essaff officiating.  Military honors will be held at the funeral home immediately following the service.

Milton E. Wing

 

Milton E. Wing, 91, of Derby died suddenly on June 1, 2010, in Newport.
He was born August 15, 1918, in Brighton, a son of Robert and Etta (Crandell) Wing.
On June 7, 1952, he married Lucille Lefevre who survives him.
He was a veteran of World War II.  Mr. Wing was a custodian for the U.S. government and in 1982 retired after 28 years of service.
He held memberships with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #798  and the American Legion Post #21, both  of Newport.
His hobbies included gardening, hunting, fishing, and working around the house.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Wing, of Derby; two sons:  Dan Wing of Winooski and David Wing and his wife, Sandi, of Houston, Texas; by five grandchildren:  Matthew, Adam, Trevor, Emily, and Derek Wing; and by several nieces and nephews.   He was predeceased by six  brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 4, at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home with the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating.  Interment followed in Lakeside Cemetery in Island Pond.

Edward Plucas at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 11, at the Veterans Cemetery in Middletown, Connecticut, with full military honors.
Earl Mosher at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 11, at the Derby Center Cemetery.
A ceremony of reinterment for Sylva and Julia Lussier and their daughter Rita Phelps will be held at the St. John of the Cross Cemetery in East Albany, at 11 a.m. on  Saturday, June 12.
