Lake Region Union High School soccer goalie Jordyn Cowles is flying high after establishing a new record for keeping other teams scoreless.

On Friday the senior goal minder snared her eighteenth shutout, breaking the old record of 17.

“It felt really great,” she said from her cell phone during a brief interview Tuesday evening.

“Hopefully, I’ll get more and then no one will be able to beat it.”

Ms. Cowles has been playing soccer since her freshman year. Her mother, Deana, says she put her heart into the game.

“She did an awesome job,” she said, speaking of the game in which Lake Region beat Oxbow, or rather shut them out, three-zip. “She worked awfully hard.”

Since entering high school, Jordyn has been the varsity team’s goalie. Her record of registering the school’s most shutouts comes as no surprise to her coach.

“To be honest, nobody has ever been as tough as her,” says Brad Urie, who is in his eighth year as the girls’ soccer coach at Lake Region.

He says his goalie has good hands, aggressively challenges those who would score on her by coming out of the net, and is not afraid to go to the ground.

“She is willing to leave her feet and give it up for the team.”

Ms. Cowles plans to go into the Air Force following her graduation next spring. And if there’s an opportunity to play soccer, she’ll take it.

“People think I’m not afraid to get on the ground and dive and what not,” she says, when asked what makes her a top notch goalie.

But like all players who excel, she knows the game and the record shutouts are all about teamwork.

“It’s not just me,” she says.
