Georgia E. Collier

Georgia Ellen Collier, 93, of Greensboro died on Thursday, December 23, 2010, at the Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton with her loving family at her bedside.

She was born September 12, 1917, in Concord, a daughter of the late George and Alice (Streeter) Damon.

She graduated from Danville High School in the class of 1935.  She continued her education at Brightlook Nursing School in St. Johnsbury, graduating in the class of 1938.

On February 13, 1943, she married Lester Alfred Collier in Greensboro.  He died in 1982.

She was a registered nurse working in several area hospitals including:  the Greensboro Hospital, Brightlook Hospital, Hardwick Hospital and Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury.  She drove school bus for the town of Greensboro for ten years and in 1997 she retired from the Greensboro Nursing Home.

Mrs. Collier was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Hardwick.  She enjoyed gardening and helping people.

Survivors include son Charles Collier and his wife, Joyce, of Cookeville, Tennessee; two daughters, Linda Hatch and her husband, Earle “Butch” Hatch, of Greensboro and Mary LeBlanc and her husband, Ernest, of Barre; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Private spring services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Joan R. Duffy

Joan R. Duffy, 69, of Lowell died on December 23, 2010, in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

She was born July 31, 1941, in Newport Center, a daughter of Merle and Vandetta (Hill) Collins.

On August 21, 1976, she married Edmund Duffy who predeceased her in 1991.

Mrs. Duffy was a self-employed nanny.  Prior to her retirement, she worked as a secretary for the Duffy brothers.

She spent almost 50 years in Massachusetts before retiring back to Vermont in 2008 where she dearly loved being near her family and her dog Missy.  She particularly enjoyed sitting on her own porch and her brother Oliver’s porch to relax and watch the wildlife.  She was a very loving and caring person to all of the family and derived great pleasure from their visits.  She also was ready to give a hand to her many friends if they needed help.

She is survived by her children:  Dave C.H. Collins of Watertown, Massachusetts, and Danielle Grimm and her husband, Marcus, of Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire; by her sister Margaret Collins of New York; by the following brothers:  Oliver Collins and his wife, Elaine, of Irasburg, Robert Collins and his wife, Simone, of Lowell, Merle Collins and his wife, Rose, of Connecticut; sister-in-law Lou of Newport; by brothers-in-law Robert and Norman Duffy; sister-in-law Marie; and by several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her parents, Merle and Vandetta Collins, and three brothers Gordon, Russell, and Clifford Collins.

Clifford C. Dyer Sr.

Clifford C. Dyer Sr., 78, of Derby died on December 22, 2010, in Newport.

Mr. Dyer was born on September 18, 1932, in Sharon, a son of Frank and Emma (Durkee) Dyer.

He joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Korean War.  On April 9, 1955, he married Sarah Hannah who survives him.

He was owner and operator of Dyer’s Welding in Caanan, New Hampshire.  He belonged to the American Legion Post #21 of Newport.

Mr. Dyer loved hunting, fishing, camping with his wife, gardening, mowing his lawn, and having his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren visit him.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Dyer, of Derby; his children:  Robert Rudder and his wife, Dianna, of Canaan, Iris Guyer and her husband, Russell, of Morgan, Clifford Dyer Jr. and his wife, Cindy, of Grantham, New Hampshire, Janice Charbono of Canaan, Pam Boyles and her husband, Mike, of Windsor, Missouri, and William Dyer and his wife, Lorine, of Canaan; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; his faithful friends Gretchen the dog and Howie the cat; his two brothers James Dyer of Sharon and Ted Dyer of Claremont, New Hampshire; and sisters Alice Chase of Pomfret and Barbara Ormond of Spring Hill, Florida.  He was predeceased by two brothers, one sister, and son-in-law Jerome Charbono.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Loella M. (Candy) Fillmore

 

Loella M. (Candy) Fillmore, 61, of West Charleston died on January 2, 2011, in Newport.

She was born November 27, 1949, in Boston, Massachusetts, a daughter of Thomas and Violet (McLaughlin) Cummings.

On August 19, 1990, she married John Fillmore who survives her.

Mrs. Fillmore was a member of, and vice-president of, Habitat for Humanity in the 1980s, and she was vice-president of the United Tech Design and a member of the Christians for Urban Justice.  She was also a counselor for the Boston Tent City.

Mrs. Fillmore is survived by her husband, John Fillmore, of West Charleston; her stepfather, Chester Lightbody, of Foxborough, Massachusetts, by the following children:  Violet Walker of Guilmington, New Hampshire, Jonathan Fillmore and his wife, Sharalee, of North Providence, Rhode Island, Joshua Fillmore and his wife, Erin, of Burlington, Massachusetts, and Rachel Harrison and her husband, Edward, of Block Island, Rhode Island; by the following nine grandchildren:  Joshua, Justin, and Lexia Wheeler, Gwen, Brady, Shannon, and Jonathan Fillmore and Ethan and Aden Harrison; by a brother John McLaughlin of Plainville, Massachusetts, and by the following sisters:  Jeannie, Beverly, Ann, and Virginia.  She was predeceased by her parents and by an uncle, John McLaughlin of Lyndonville.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 5, at the Free Will Baptist Church in West Charleston with the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating.

Marianne Frances Hart

Marianne Frances Hart died on December 22, 2010, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on March 23, 1932, in the Bronx, New York, to James and Viola (Weaver) Lancaster.

She graduated from Hudson Falls High School in Hudson Falls, New York, and went on to nursing school to earn her RN degree from St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, New York.

She married her best friend, Richard “Dick” Hart, on August 8, 1953.  They lived in Hudson Falls, El Paso and Laredo, Texas, Derby Line, and finally Las Vegas, Nevada.  Mrs. Hart worked as a nurse in all the places she lived.  She was a lifelong, loving caregiver as hundreds of people can attest.

She enjoyed playing bridge, bingo and poker.  She was an excellent cook and winner of a state cooking contest in Vermont.  She loved cats and volunteering at the cat shelter in Sloan, Nevada.  Most of all she loved being together with family and friends, and her home was always open to all.

She leaves behind her daughters and their spouses:  Colleen and Richard Mayhew and Shannon and Tom Healy; grandchildren Adam Healy and his wife, Anna, of Springfield, Virginia, and Morgan Healy of Cleveland, Ohio; “adopted” daughter Betty Belknap of Las Vegas; in-laws Linda Hart and Jane and Jimmy Brayman of South Glens Falls, New York; nieces and nephews; and many beloved friends.

She was predeceased by her parents and husband.

A memorial Mass was held on December 27 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a favorite animal shelter.

 

Debra Hunt

Debra Hunt of Morgan, died on Christmas day, December 25, 2010, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center after a long illness.  She was 45 years old.

She was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on April 23, 1965.

She attended high school in Saskatoon and received her bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of Saskatchewan.  She worked in Yellow Knife, Northwest Territories, and subsequently as a senior writer for the government of British Columbia in Victoria.

She married Gerry Hunt of Morgan in 1996, and the couple lived in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and Portland, Oregon.  In 2002 they returned to Vermont where she worked for The Chrysallus Center and Newport Pediatrics.  In 2004, she was a founder of Northeast Kingdom Homecare and The Meeting Place, and she was president of the company at the time of her death.

Mrs. Hunt loved animals, and her household included horses, dogs and cats.  Her Jack Russell, Maddie, was a constant companion.  When she lived in Oregon she became an accomplished glass artist with her work sold in a variety of art galleries.  Debra Hunt Glass was shown at The Portland Saturday Market, a large artisan fair that attracted thousands of people every weekend.

Mrs. Hunt is survived by her husband, Gerry Hunt; stepsons Elias and Eben of Cornish, New Hampshire, and Ezra of Portland, Oregon; her mother-in-law, Pat Hunt, of Morgan; brother Scott Hardy of Winnipeg, Alberta, and by brothers- and sisters-in-law Donald and Andrea Hunt of Newport and Andrew and Patricia Hunt of Vernal, New York.  Her parents, Robert and Lora Hardy, predeceased her.

A memorial service will be held at the Curtis- Britch-Converse-Rushford  Funeral Home at 37 Lake Road in Newport at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 21.

Mrs. Hunt’s work with the aging can continue through donations in her memory to the Area Agency on Aging, 59 Waterfront Plaza, Unit #14, Newport, Vermont 05855.

Louis Philip Joyal

Louis Philip Joyal, 84, of Derby Line, died on December 22, 2010, in Newport.

He was born December 5, 1926, in Rock Island, Quebec, a son of Moise and Albertine (Boulanger) Joyal.

On June 18, 1955, he married Florence Jacobs who survives him.

Prior to his marriage, Mr. Joyal was in the Merchant Marine in Canada.  He was also a self-employed carpenter and owner and operator of Joyal Construction which his son Rick is now carrying on.

He enjoyed attending horse and dog races, hunting, fishing, playing poker, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Florence Joyal, of Derby Line; his two sons:  Rick Joyal and his wife, Bonnie, of Derby, and Robert Joyal and his wife, Lynn, of Derby; by his four grandsons:  Jason, Derek, Dana and Sean Joyal; by great-grandson Carson Joyal; by three sisters:  Florence Joyal, of Rock Island, Valeda Veto of Derby Line, and Mary Jane Holmes of Newport.  He was predeceased by five brothers:  Albert, George, Andrew, Robert, and Leon; and by a sister, Bernadette Young.

Funeral services were held on December 28 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Derby Line where a Mass was celebrated.

Marion LaRose

 

Marion LaRose, 100, formerly of Barton, died in Newport on Saturday, December 18, 2010.

She was born in Brownington on April 5, 1910, a daughter of Edward “Phil” and Lizzie (Magoon) Roberts.

She married Francis J. LaRose in 1932.  He predeceased her several years ago.  She was also predeceased by her sisters Twilla, Theda, Verla, and Verna, and brothers Vernon, Sherman, Forest, and Maurice.  She is survived by several nieces and nephews, and her sister-in-law Evelyn Jenne of Orleans.

Funeral services will be held at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in the spring.  Services will be announced at that time.

Reginald Morin
Reginald Morin, formerly of Newport, died at the age of 71 in Sun City West, Arizona, on December 22, 2010.
He worked in the dairy industry for 38 years until he retired in 1994.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Faye Kendall Morin; two daughters, Debbi Neff and her husband, Richard, and Vickie Erickson and her husband, Douglas; a brother, Raymond Morin and his wife, Emily; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be in Vancouver, Washington, at the convenience of the family.
Donations in his memory may be made to the American Lung Association.
Michael Plaskonos
Michael Plaskonos, 87, of Derby, died on December 19, 2010, in the Reading Hospital in Reading, Pennsylvania.
He was the husband of Ann C. (Courtney) Plaskonos, whom he married on May 26, 1956.
Born in McAdoo, Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late Teodore and Martha (Snihur) Plaskonos.
He was a 1941 graduate of McAdoo High School, a 1949 graduate of Albright College, and a 1955 graduate of Bucknell University.
Mr. Plaskonos was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II. He was a participant in D-Day and fought in the European theater.
He taught English and social studies for 25 years in Columbus, Ohio, until his retirement in 1985.
Mr. Plaskonos was an avid sports fan.  In high school, he was a three-sport athlete and named to the all state football team as well as the Ukrainian All American team in 1942.  He continued to play football at Albright where he was captain of the team his senior year.
He was a member of St. John Baptist de la Salle Roman Catholic Church in Shillington, Pennsylvania.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two children:  Martha (Marti) and her husband, Robert Spezialetti, of Mohnton, Pennsylvania, and Kristi Plaskonos and her husband, Eric, of Fairfield, Connecticut; his sister Ann Plaskonos of Drums, Pennsylvania, and his brother Anthony M. Plaskonos of Langhorne, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren:  Matthew Spezialetti, Benjamin Spezialetti, Bryn Spezialetti, Blanche Plaskonos, and Henri Plaskonos.  He was predeceased by five siblings:  Mary Mashack, Paul Plaskonos, Stephen Plaskonos, Olga Carfora, and Wasil Plaskonos.
A Mass was celebrated December 22 in St. John’s Church.  Burial will be private.

Lee Ann Ranalli

Lee Ann Ranalli, 48, died unexpectedly in Burlington on December 10, 2010.
A memorial Mass was held on December 18 at St. Edward’s Church in Derby Line.
She leaves her parents, Robert Ranalli and Carole Estey; her sister Lisa Ranalli; the parents of her heart Richard Westlake, (who predeceased her in 1996) and his wife, Marie Westlake.  The relatives of her heart included her brother Daniel Westlake and his wife, Joan, of Wakefield, Massachusetts; her sisters Lisa Fay and her husband, Jon, of Carlisle, Massachusetts, and their two children Brittany and Brendon; Kathleen Westlake of Aviano, Italy, Patricia Westlake of Wakefield, and Mary Westlake of Newport.  A much loved “Auntie Lee” is going to be missed by Jade, Gracie, Amanda, and Vanessa Westlake.  Marcel Ruell and his wife, Kathy, held a special place in their hearts for Lee Ann and she for them.  Her loss is unimaginable.
She was employed by Saylor Enterprises, better known as Miracle Ear, for a number of years.  She will be sadly missed by her fellow co-workers.
A graveside service will be held in the spring.
Robert John Theriault

Robert John Theriault, 68, of Brimfield, Massachusetts, died at Wing Memorial Hospital on December 24, 2010.  Constantly at his side were his wife, Nancy, and stepdaughter Tracey Stankus.
Born on May 9, 1942, in Lowell, Massachusetts, he was a son of the late Edgar and Helen (Deisek) Theriault, previously of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, where Mr. Theriault lived for most of his life.
He graduated from Chelmsford High School in 1960 and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Air Force.  He worked as an electrician for various companies in eastern and western Massachusetts, his last job being the head electrician at Monson Developmental Center.
The love of Mr. Theriault’s life was his granddaughter Jessica, who came to spend summers and every Christmas with him.
He leaves his wife of 22 years along with two children, Renee Theriault of Hudson, New Hampshire, and Robert Theriault Jr. of Ludlow, Massachusetts, as well as stepdaughters Tracey Stankus and her husband, Joe, of Holden, Massachusetts, Julie Hutchinson and her husband, Robert, of Sanford, Florida, and Kelley Soland and her husband, Terry, of Augusta, Wisconsin.  Mr. Theriault will be missed by many including his grandchildren Sonya, Ray, Randy, Jessica, Michael, Logan, Sabrina, and Mark, as well as several nieces and nephews and siblings David Theriault and his wife, Patty, of Pembroke, Massachusetts, and Carol Mahoney and her husband, Kevin, of Chelmsford.
A memorial service will take place on January 27 at 10:30 a.m. at the Beers and Story Palmer Funeral Home.

Muriel E. Turenne “Old Gram”

Muriel E. Turenne, 96, died peacefully on January 1, 2011, in West Glover.
She was born May 24, 1914, in Orleans, a daughter of Lester and Margaret Holmes.
She married Paul Turenne who predeceased her in 1995.
She moved to West Glover three years ago to live with her granddaughter Norine. She loved to travel around and she loved her scratch tickets and playing cards.  She loved her grandchildren and family and she looked forward to her morning coffee and a doughnut from Brad as well as frequent visits from Bretton and Nolan and spending time with her neighbors Ron and Tress Cote.
She is survived by her children:  Lorraine Orsini and her significant other, Robert Bourque, Lyle Stearns, and Robin Lameriand; by grandchildren Norine Phillips, James Westover Sr. and his wife, Betty, Chris Stearns, Kevin Stearns, Richard Stearns, Ralph Stearns, and Debra Stearns; by the following great-grandchildren:  Bradford Phillips and Brittany Braun, Brandon Phillips and Amy Rollins, Barry Phillips, Bethany Phillips and Joe Maher, Gary Shepard, James Westover II, Michael Westover, Lisa Malloy, Nicole Malloy and Michelle Malloy; by great-great-grandchildren Gary Shepard Jr., Madison Westover, Brandon Phillips II, Nolan Marsh, and Bretton Phillips; by three sisters: Mabel Perkins and her husband, Ralph, Rena LaCoss, and Bertha and Stanley Robbins; by several nieces and nephews; and by her loving dog Annie.  She was predeceased by a son Wayne Stearns; two granddaughters Cindy Malloy and Delores Stearns; two brothers Chet and Gerald Holmes; and by a sister Pearl LaCoss.
A graveside service will be held in the spring in Westlook Cemetery in Glover.
