Michael Hall Anderson
Michael Hall Anderson of Sanibel Island, Florida, died on Tuesday, December 14, 2010.
He was born May 13, 1939, in Groton, Massachusetts, to Nathaniel C. and Margaret (O’Brien) Anderson.
He is survived by his wife, Birdie Anderson; his daughter Kathleen McPartlan of Groton; and his sons and their wives:  Kristin and Michael Anderson Jr. of Newport and Dunstable, Massachusetts; David and Sara Anderson of Groton; and Christopher and Paula Anderson of Ayer, Massachusetts; by his sister Nancy Irvin of Fort Myers Beach, Florida; his brother N. Carl Anderson Jr. of Pine Island, Minnesota; by six grandchildren:  Francis, Katherine, and Megan McPartlan and Alexander, Elisabeth, and Christian Anderson; and two great-grandchildren. He was formerly married to Anita Friedrich Anderson of Groton, who is the mother of his children.
After high school, Mr. Anderson entered the GE tool and die maker apprentice program in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, (one of the last of such appointments in the U.S.), then earned a bachelor’s degree in business and marketing from Lowell Technological Institute.  He was very proud of his apprenticeship and said it rivaled the honorary doctorate he was later awarded by the University of Massachusetts, Lowell.
Mr. Anderson launched his business career as a salesman with IBM.  After 16 years with IBM, having attained the position of corporate director of strategy evaluation in White Plains, New York, his professional path took him to positions all over the world. He was president of the Japan based NEC and of Nixdorf Corporation of West Germany.  He ended his career as president, chairman of the board, and chief executive officer of Hogan Systems, in Dallas, Texas.
Mr. Anderson retired to Sanibel Island and Rangeley, Maine.  He played as hard as he worked.  He loved golf, fishing, and sailing, but his passion was refurbishing old wooden boats and historic homes.  He liked to leave everything better than he found it.  He was so proud of his son Mike Jr.’s work ethic and dedication to his family.  He was equally proud of his Vermont grandchildren:  Alex, who graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, where he played football as Mr. Anderson had in the 1950s; Elisabeth, who graduated from Groton School, where Mr. Anderson’s parents had run the laundry for half a century; and Christian, who paved his own way to Holderness School.
Mr. Anderson served his community, too.  He was a selectman in Groton for many years, serving as chairman.  He also served as water commissioner and founder of the distinguished Hollis Street Racquet Club.  In Sanibel, he spent much of his time golfing with friends as a member of the prestigious Dewsweepers and commissioner of the Wolf Pack at the Sanctuary Golf Club.
A celebration of life was held on Sanibel Island on December 17.  Later tributes will follow in Groton and Rangeley.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Mr. Anderson’s name to Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust, P.O. Box 349, Oquossoc, Maine, 04964, or to Rangeley Region Health Partnership, P.O. Box 722, Rangeley, Maine, 04970.
