NEWPORT — The visiting Craftsbury Academy Chargers girls basketball team won their first meeting of the season against the home team United Christian Academy Lady Crusaders 44-20 on Saturday morning.  The Chargers rode a dominant second quarter where the team recorded 14 points while keeping the Crusaders entirely off the score sheet.

Though the Chargers would outscore the home side in all four quarters it was not the entirely lopsided affair the final score might suggest.  The Crusaders hung tight against the Chargers through the first quarter trailing only by two points.  It was the second half, dominated by Craftsbury’s Janet Bohannon who recorded eight of her team’s 14 points in the quarter, that turned the tide against UCA.  The 16-point buffer Craftsbury put up before halftime proved an insurmountable barrier to the home side.

Bohannon’s superb play persisted throughout the contest as she racked up 24 of Craftsbury’s 44 points on the day.  Hannah Piette put in a solid performance for the Crusaders knocking in ten of the team’s 20 points including a pair of field goals.

Other key contributors were Craftsbury’s Aysha Hodgdon who recorded six points and UCA’s Laura Libby who also added six points for her team.
